Zhong Qi Chen, 59, from El Monte, faces one count of murder with allegations that he personally used a handgun and caused great bodily injury and death, according to Paul Eakins of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. Chen pleaded not guilty at his appearance n Alhambra Superior Court November 26. Chen allegedly shot and killed Yining Xie, 58, on the property of The China Press, 2121 W. Mission Rd. Xie died from gunshot wounds to the head and torso, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. The shooting was over a dispute between the two, but the specifics of the dispute remain hidden. Chen was found and arrested at the scene, Alhambra Police said. Chen faces 50 years to life in prison if convicted as charged. Bail has been set at $6 million. He is scheduled to return to court December 18. Firefighters responded at 11:40 p.m. Thanksgiving night to extinguish a large fire at the two-story structure, 924 E. Main St. and requested a 2nd-alarm response to knock down the flames, according to the Alhambra Fire Department. Heavy flames already pierced the roof by the time firefighters arrived on scene.
The same building caught fire at 1:42 p.m. Thanksgiving day. Alhambra Police officers redirected traffic away from the scene. All lanes were temporarily shut down, but reopened at 5 a.m. Friday. Zhong Qi Chen was booked on suspicion of murder with a firearm, according to the Alhambra Police Department. Chen is accused of shooting his co-worker multiple times at the China Press offices, 2121 W. Mission Rd. just before 9:30 a.m.
A handgun was recovered at the scene.
Chen is being held in lieu of $1 million bail. His scheduled court date is November 20 at Alhambra Municipal Court, according to Los Angeles County booking records. The shooting took place at The China Press, 2121 W. Mission Rd. around 9:30 a.m. The victim died at the scene. It is unclear if the suspect was arrested at the scene. Detectives believe the incident stemmed from workplace-related violence, according to the Alhambra Police Department.
A handgun purportedly used in the shooting was recovered. A motive is not yet known, Alhambra Police said. Detectives believe there are no additional suspects. Helen Siuhung Law, 60, pleaded no contest to one misdemeanor count of child endangerment, according to Venusse Navid of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. Law was immediately sentenced to three years of probation and two days in county jail. She was credited with time served, Navid said. Law was additionally ordered to complete 52 parenting classes and abide by a 10-year criminal protective order under a negotiated plea agreement. Officers aided the distressed 6-year-old boy after a passerby found him sweating profusely and crying inside an SUV June 12 in the 700 block of Valley Boulevard. Law reportedly left the child in the SUV for two hours while she ran errands and ate at a nearby restaurant. The inside temperature of the SUV was more than 120 degrees, Alhambra Police said. Alhambra firefighters tended to the child and transported him to an area hospital for observation, Alhambra Police said. Officers responded to a home in the 600 block of South 6th Street around 11:20 p.m. on a 9-1-1 call from the resident stating he shot an intruder. Police found the suspect was shot in the upper body, according to the Alhambra Police Department. Detectives are trying to determine if the shooting is related to a domestic dispute earlier November 11 in which a man and woman were arguing with each other. Police responded to the same address about one hour earlier to the domestic dispute. The man and woman, whom detectives said were dating, agreed to separate for the night, Alhambra Police said. Alhambra Police have yet to announce if an arrest was made. |
