Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor ALHAMBRA - The man accused of gunning down his boss at their newspaper office November 16 was officially charged Monday.
Zhong Qi Chen, 59, from El Monte, faces one count of murder with allegations that he personally used a handgun and caused great bodily injury and death, according to Paul Eakins of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. Chen pleaded not guilty at his appearance n Alhambra Superior Court November 26. Chen allegedly shot and killed Yining Xie, 58, on the property of The China Press, 2121 W. Mission Rd. Xie died from gunshot wounds to the head and torso, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. The shooting was over a dispute between the two, but the specifics of the dispute remain hidden. Chen was found and arrested at the scene, Alhambra Police said. Chen faces 50 years to life in prison if convicted as charged. Bail has been set at $6 million. He is scheduled to return to court December 18. |
