CityWatch Editor EL MONTE - Street closures remain in effect while authorities investigate a police shooting that led to one suspect receiving injuries considered not life-threatening Monday. Officers were investigating a stolen vehicle report April 14 in the area of Garvey Avenue and New Deal Avenue. At some point, a shooting occurred and one suspect was struck by gunfire, according to Sgt. Burse of the El Monte Police Department. The shooting occurred around 11:50 a.m. “No officers were injured. We have two suspects in custody. We’re still developing information at this point. LASD Homicide is responding for the investigation,” Burse told SGV CityWatch. The areas of Garvey Avenue and Valley Boulevard remain closed, as well as Garvey Avenue between Peck Road and Tyler Avenue, according to the El Monte Police Department. Written by AARON CASTREJON
CityWatch Editor EL MONTE - A man is out of the hospital and in custody Thursday, booked on suspicion of attempted murder of a peace officer. Use of force was needed on the suspect who originally used a knife to threaten neighbors in the 10000 block of Bodger Street just before 11 p.m. April 9, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. “When [El Monte] officers arrived on scene, they located the suspect armed with a knife and gave him numerous verbal commands to drop the weapon,” to which he allegedly did not comply, according to the Sheriff’s Department in a written statement. Police shot the man as he advanced towards them while armed. He was treated at a hospital and later released to El Monte Police custody. The LA County District Attorney’s Office Justice System Integrity Division responded and will conduct its own independent investigation, according to the Sheriff’s Department. CityWatch Editor EL MONTE - Sheriff’s homicide detectives are investigating the Monday shooting death of a man. A man was found shot in the 2300 block of Peck Road April 7 around 9:30 p.m. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Detectives have yet to reveal the possible circumstances leading up to the fatal shooting. CityWatch Editor EL MONTE - A man described as being in his 50s died on a platform at the El Monte bus terminal Sunday. Few details are known, but the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau will be investigating this death, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Transit Services Bureau. First responders were called to the lower bay of the bus terminal, 3501 Santa Anita Ave., around 10:25 a.m. March 23. “I'm not sure if the patron fell getting off the bus or on the bus. They tried everything to resuscitate him. From what I'm hearing,” according to a source who asked not to be publicly identified. The entire lower bay was closed during the investigation. All buses that serve the lower bay were rerouted to the upper level until investigators cleared the scene and the body was removed. The man appeared to be exiting a bus when he died. Help was summoned immediately and CPR was provided. The body was removed around 2 p.m. The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner will publicly identify the man and provide a cause of death. Written by AARON CASTREJON
CityWatch Editor EL MONTE - El Monte Police officers and K-9 units from two other agencies are attempting to bring a safe end to a barricade Tuesday. Baldwin Avenue between Valley Boulevard and Loftus Street remains blocked, according to the El Monte Police Department. A lieutenant at the El Monte Police Department declined to provide any other details beyond a barricaded suspect operation, an eyewitness said he knows the suspect, who is reportedly a felon armed with a weapon and bulletproof vest. CityWatch Editor EL MONTE - A man accused of burglary by store employees allegedly brandished a handgun In retaliation, leading to a deadly police shooting Monday, investigators said. The man was accompanied by a female when they tried to leave Target, 3610 Peck Rd., with merchandise not paid for around 8:45 p.m. December 16. Employees confronted the man and woman who then left empty handed, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. The man returned to the Target, weapon in hand, and brandished it, according to the Sheriff’s Department. Both suspects fled in a vehicle before El Monte Police officers arrived, setting off a search. Officers located and tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver refused. After a brief chase, the man fled the vehicle on foot. Officers followed the man to the 11000 block of Tyler Avenue where he was shot multiple times. He died at the scene. A semiautomatic weapon was found, according to the Sheriff’s Department. CityWatch Editor EL MONTE - Sheriff’s homicide detectives are investigating what led El Monte police to shoot and kill a man who allegedly caused a disturbance at a shopping center Monday night. The suspect, who remains publicly unidentified, was allegedly causing a disturbance and brandishing a weapon at a target store around 8:45 p.m. December 16. El Monte officers called to the disturbance located a dark-colored vehicle the suspect allegedly drove from the scene and attempted a traffic stop, but the suspect refused to stop and lead officers on a brief chase, authorities said. The suspect ran from the vehicle in the area of Tyler Avenue and Valley Boulevard The suspect died at the scene. Written by AARON CASTREJON
CityWatch Editor EL MONTE - A pedestrian was struck and killed on the I-10 freeway early Saturday morning. The pedestrian was struck and killed by a black Hyundai on the Peck Road on ramp to the eastbound I-10 freeway around 4:12 p.m. November 23. Caltrans assisted the California Highway Patrol with lane closures, including closing the Peck Road and Valley Boulevard on ramps until the medical examiner took possession of the body. CityWatch Editor LOS ANGELES - Authorities named the 58-year-old man found dead on or near a bike path November 14. Charles Dewire was identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner. His cause of death was deferred, pending additional investigation. First responders were sent to the bike path near the southbound 605 freeway and the I-10 freeway around 3:18 p.m., according to Officer Garcia with the California Highway Patrol. A quick Internet search revealed an eye-opening photo essay by Los Angeles Times photographer Francine Orr. The essay captured life in what is referred to as “The Cave,” a series of cement vaults underneath the I-10 at the San Gabriel River. Many transients make their life in The Cave, including a man identified in the photo essay as Charles Dewire. His sister, Jamie Dewire, also lived in The Cave and died May 14, 2009 of heroin and morphine intoxication underneath Ramona Avenue, according to Medical Examiner records. Written by AARON CASTREJON
CityWatch Editor EL MONTE - Authorities are investigating after a dead man was reportedly found on or near the San Gabriel River Bikepath Thursday afternoon. First responders were sent to the bikepath near the southbound 605 freeway and the I-10 freeway around 3:18 p.m. November 14, according to Officer Garcia with the California Highway Patrol. The call from a witness was originally sent to the Baldwin Park Police Department. The call was then transferred to the CHP. Investigators were unable to determine jurisdiction, so the CHP took the investigation as a courtesy, Garcia told SGV CityWatch. The victim was only described as a white man in his 50s. Legal next of kin have yet to be notified, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner. |
