CityWatch Editor EL MONTE - A man accused of burglary by store employees allegedly brandished a handgun In retaliation, leading to a deadly police shooting Monday, investigators said. The man was accompanied by a female when they tried to leave Target, 3610 Peck Rd., with merchandise not paid for around 8:45 p.m. December 16. Employees confronted the man and woman who then left empty handed, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. The man returned to the Target, weapon in hand, and brandished it, according to the Sheriff’s Department. Both suspects fled in a vehicle before El Monte Police officers arrived, setting off a search. Officers located and tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver refused. After a brief chase, the man fled the vehicle on foot. Officers followed the man to the 11000 block of Tyler Avenue where he was shot multiple times. He died at the scene. A semiautomatic weapon was found, according to the Sheriff’s Department. CityWatch Editor EL MONTE - Sheriff’s homicide detectives are investigating what led El Monte police to shoot and kill a man who allegedly caused a disturbance at a shopping center Monday night. The suspect, who remains publicly unidentified, was allegedly causing a disturbance and brandishing a weapon at a target store around 8:45 p.m. December 16. El Monte officers called to the disturbance located a dark-colored vehicle the suspect allegedly drove from the scene and attempted a traffic stop, but the suspect refused to stop and lead officers on a brief chase, authorities said. The suspect ran from the vehicle in the area of Tyler Avenue and Valley Boulevard The suspect died at the scene. “The City of El Monte is saddened and shocked by tonight’s tragic shooting that killed two of our own police officers,” according to city officials. Officers were responding to a reported stabbing at the Siesta Inn, 10237 Garvey Ave., and immediately came under fire upon arrival, according to El Monte officials. “There are no words to describe our grief and devastation by this senseless act as we learned about the passing of two of our police officers. It weighs heavy on our hearts and we are sending our support to their families,” according to a joint statement by the City of El Monte, El Monte Police Department and El Monte Police Officers Association. Police responded to a robbery call at 1:55 p.m. and during a search, found a man matching a suspect description near Durfee Avenue and Garvey Avenue February 15. The suspect ran from an officer who attempted to speak with him, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. The suspect ended up near the freeway off ramp at Durfee Avenue. The officer caught up with him and the two began fighting with each other. Another officer arrived as back up. It was then that a police shooting occurred, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. The suspect died at the scene. No officers were injured. The suspect, only described as a male adult, died at the scene, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said. Detectives with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau are investigating. The incident unfolded around 12:30 p.m. in the 9800 block of Cortada Street December 2. El Monte officers arriving to the scene of a 9-1-1 hang up encountered the suspect, according to Sgt. Benjamin Grubb of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. “Upon arrival, the officers were encountered by the suspect. He was armed with a bladed weapon at which point an officer-involved shooting occurred,” Grubb said.
The suspect was struck in the upper torso. No officers were injured, Grubb said. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau is assisting with the investigation. The shooting took place around 2:45 p.m. at 3501 Santa Anita Ave. El Monte officers responding to a call of a man shooting a gun encountered a suspect. During a foot pursuit, the suspect withdrew a weapon and officers opened fire. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. A gun was recovered at the scene. Both upper and lower platforms are closed, according to the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority. |
