CityWatch Editor LOS ANGELES - Authorities named the 58-year-old man found dead on or near a bike path November 14. Charles Dewire was identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner. His cause of death was deferred, pending additional investigation. First responders were sent to the bike path near the southbound 605 freeway and the I-10 freeway around 3:18 p.m., according to Officer Garcia with the California Highway Patrol. A quick Internet search revealed an eye-opening photo essay by Los Angeles Times photographer Francine Orr. The essay captured life in what is referred to as “The Cave,” a series of cement vaults underneath the I-10 at the San Gabriel River. Many transients make their life in The Cave, including a man identified in the photo essay as Charles Dewire. His sister, Jamie Dewire, also lived in The Cave and died May 14, 2009 of heroin and morphine intoxication underneath Ramona Avenue, according to Medical Examiner records. Written by AARON CASTREJON
CityWatch Editor EL MONTE - Authorities are investigating after a dead man was reportedly found on or near the San Gabriel River Bikepath Thursday afternoon. First responders were sent to the bikepath near the southbound 605 freeway and the I-10 freeway around 3:18 p.m. November 14, according to Officer Garcia with the California Highway Patrol. The call from a witness was originally sent to the Baldwin Park Police Department. The call was then transferred to the CHP. Investigators were unable to determine jurisdiction, so the CHP took the investigation as a courtesy, Garcia told SGV CityWatch. The victim was only described as a white man in his 50s. Legal next of kin have yet to be notified, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor EL MONTE - A Sig Alert has been issued on the I-10 freeway near Durfee Avenue in El Monte after a pedestrian was struck and killed Thursday morning.
First responders were sent to the location just before 5:30 a.m. Thursday, November 9. The No. 5, 6 and 7 Lanes are shut down until at least 7 a.m. until the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner arrives, according to the California Highway Patrol. Prior to the crash, there were numerous reports of a man with a backpack nearly being struck while walking near the slow lane of the west I-10 freeway. The pedestrian was finally struck and went down in the No. 4 lane, according to CHP traffic logs. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor EL MONTE – Police arrested five people involved in an alleged assault Sunday night that led to a pursuit into Los Angeles and back again.
The five suspects were involved to varying degrees in an assault in the 10500 block of Valley Boulevard around 8 p.m. November 14. The victims, a father and son, were allegedly assaulted after leaving a restaurant, according to lt. Pete Rasic of the El Monte Police Department. Police quickly saw the suspect vehicle near the scene after the victims described the vehicle. The driver and suspects sped away after officers attempted a traffic stop, Rasic told SGV CityWatch. The fled officers at high speeds, sometimes at 100 miles per hour. During the pursuit a handgun was tossed from the suspect vehicle, but was later recovered, Rasic told SGV CityWatch. The pursuit ended with three suspects being quickly detained on Santa Anita Avenue near Valley Boulevard in El Monte. Two suspects continued to flee on foot, with one fleeing into the rather large Rio Hondo flood control channel, but both fleeing suspects were caught, Rasic told SGV CityWatch. In an odd twist, a vehicle seemingly unrelated to the pursuit caught fire on Santa Anita Avenue south of Valley Boulevard just after the pursuit ended. The driver of the burning vehicle told officers that while in Los Angeles he was a victim of a crime involving the assault suspects. Officers are investigating this new allegation, Rasic told SGV CityWatch. Booking information was not yet available. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor SAN GABRIEL – The pursuit of a stolen Hyundai was ended with the driver at-large after an El Monte police cruiser crashed during the chase Friday.
The police cruiser occupied with two officers crashed while exiting onto Del Mar Avenue from the west I-10 freeway May 7. The officers suffered minor injuries, according to Lt. Richard Luna of the El Monte Police Department. The officers attempted to stop the driver of a silver Hyundai, possibly a Sonata, for allegedly running a red light at Ramona Boulevard and Peck Road around 4:52 a.m. The driver refused to stop, Luna told SGV CityWatch. The silver Hyundai was reported stolen, Luna told SGV CityWatch. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor EL MONTE – A driver was arrested by the California Highway Patrol Wednesday after allegedly refusing to stop for El Monte officers for talking on the phone while driving. An El Monte officer witnessed the female driver talking on a cell phone while waiting at a red light at Santa Anita Avenue and Valley Boulevard April 29 around 11:12 p.m. The driver refused to pull over for the officer and the chase was on, according to Lt. Ernie Cramer of the El Monte Police Department. The pursuit entered the freeways where officers pursued the driver through Whittier and into Orange County. The CHP was given the pursuit in the Buena Park area, Cramer said. The pursuit wound its way through Brea, La Habra and even Fullerton, according to CHP radio traffic.

The driver stopped on West Artesia Boulevard at South Wilmington Avenue in Compton and refused to exit until less lethal rounds helped the CHP take the suspect into custody. The CHP could not be reached Thursday morning for arrest information on the suspect. El Monte Police were called at 9:54 p.m. The vehicle was struck three times by gunfire on the right passenger side. Two rounds hit the rear passenger door, the third struck the pillar between the rear and front passenger doors, according to Lt. Ernie Cramer of the El Monte Police Department. The victim and his driver were found near Baldwin Avenue and Loftus Drive, according to the California Highway Patrol. The shooting may have taken place between Baldwin Park Boulevard and the Baldwin Avenue exit, Cramer said. The driver, with the victim in tow, chased a white Ford pickup driven by the suspect who got away after exiting onto Temple City Boulevard in Rosemead, the CHP said. The driver didn’t realize the vehicle, nor her passenger, were hit by gunfire until after they stopped, the CHP said. El Monte Police began pursuing the driver after she failed to stop for an officer before 1:30 a.m. December 2. The chase took the eastbound I-10 freeway into Claremont where the CHP took over, according to Lt. Pete Rasic of the El Monte Police Department. CHP officers from the San Gorgonio Pass Office took over the chase near Cherry Valley Boulevard and the I-10 freeway in the community of Cherry Valley, according to Officer Matt Napier of the CHP San Gorgonio Pass Office.
The driver, 26-year-old Carolina Hernandez, an El Monte resident, was arrested and booked on suspicion of felony evading, possession of a stolen vehicle and possession of stolen property, Napier said. Hernandez’s passenger was detained and released. The crash was first reported at 5:22 a.m. Both victims killed in the crash died at the scene, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Moises Marroquin. Three other people received a minor injuries in the crash, according to the Los Angeles county fire department, but it was not immediately known if those three injured were taken into area hospitals. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor EL MONTE - A Sig Alert was issued for the westbound I-10 freeway off ramp at Durfee Avenue after a motorcyclist was shot Saturday. The Sig Alert, issued at 1:46 p.m., is in place for an unknown duration, according to Officer Stephan Brandt of the California Highway Patrol. The CHP responded to a reported shooting victim at the Durfee Avenue off ramp at 1:13 p.m., according to CHP traffic logs. It is unclear where the shooting took place. Firefighters were dispatched at 1:13 p.m., arrived five minutes later, treated and transported one patient to County/USC Medical Center, according to Los Angeles County Fire Captain Ron Haralson.
CHP officers initiated a traffic break and searched for evidence of gunfire, but could not locate it. An officer who spoke to the victim confirmed he was shot, according to CHP radio traffic. A friend of the victim initially told a CHP dispatcher that a rival motorcycle gang was behind the shooting, but that claim was unconfirmed. A suspect remains outstanding. |
