First responders were sent to the location just before 5:30 a.m. Thursday, November 9. The No. 5, 6 and 7 Lanes are shut down until at least 7 a.m. until the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner arrives, according to the California Highway Patrol. Prior to the crash, there were numerous reports of a man with a backpack nearly being struck while walking near the slow lane of the west I-10 freeway. The pedestrian was finally struck and went down in the No. 4 lane, according to CHP traffic logs. El Monte Police officers responding to a assault with a deadly weapon call in the 11000 block of Ranchito Street discovered the body of a 40 to 45-year-old woman. She suffered from multiple stab wounds. Paramedics declared her dead at the scene, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. First responders were sent to the location just before 5 p.m. Sunday, October 22. The suspect, only described as a Latino woman 20 to 25 years old, was detained outside of the residence. She was later taken into custody. A potential murder weapon was found at the scene. It is not publicly clear if investigators have determined a motive. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor EL MONTE - An outside fire so intense it eventually led to the destruction of three metal clad buildings was finally knocked down Sunday after more than five hours of burning.
Two of the three buildings that burned were vacant. One building housed what was described as “building materials,” which jettisoned thick columns of black smoke as they burned, putting out a horrid “pool chemical” smell across the San Gabriel valley. Firefighters were dispatched to the blaze at 9240 Whitmore Street just after 2 p.m. Sunday, July 16. The response was immediately upgraded to a second alarm, bringing in 60 to 70 additional firefighters after heavy fire and smoke were observed on arrival, according to Henry Narvaez, Los Angeles County Fire Department public information officer. The initial outside fire penetrated to inside of a building and spread throughout. The fire was so hot that it began burning in buildings on either side of the first building to be affected, Narvaez told SGV CityWatch. The response was then upgraded to a third-alarm, bringing 100or more firefighters across the sand Gabriel Valley to the scene. After the initial fire was put out, cruise remain on scene for many more hours to completely put out hot spots inside of the burning buildings. Excavators room brought in and begin ripping apart, and tearing down the metal clad buildings. The “pool chemical” smell was possibly detected as far away as the city of Upland, according to a statement from the Upland Police Department. More than five hours, after firefighters were dispatched, knockdown was called. The cause is still under investigation. The fire burned at a two-story apartment complex in the 11400 block of Magnolia Street in El Monte just after 3 a.m. Monday, March 27. First responders arrived to find one unit at the complex well involved with flames, according to Dispatch Supervisor Martin Rangel of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. “When the fire was extinguished, it was discovered that a decedent was found in one of the apartments,” according to El Monte Police Lt. Peter Rasic. El Monte Police detectives are assisting county fire investigators and the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner in determining the cause. The American Red Cross is assisting displaced residents. Authorities and Los Angeles County firefighters responded to the bus terminal, 3501 Santa Anita Ave., at 5:54 p.m. to a report of an unresponsive person. Firefighters were unable to revive the man and he was declared dead at the scene, according to Lt. Hebb of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Transit Services Bureau. The man was found near bus bay 29, Hebb told SGV CityWatch. It is unclear how long the man was there before being discovered. Reports from the scene show the shooting took place on North Allgeyer Avenue south of Valley Boulevard. Firefighters were dispatched at 4:50 a.m. May 5. One unidentified victim was taken to a hospital, according to a public information officer with the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The patient later died, according to reports from the scene. The El Monte Police Department is deferring all questions to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau. Officers were called just before 9 p.m. to a male down and bleeding in the street at El Monte Avenue and Lower Azusa Road. The male was declared dead at the scene by Los Angeles County firefighters, according to Lt. Knight of the El Monte Police Department. The suspect driver did not remain at the scene. The description of the driver and vehicle are not available, Knight told SGV CityWatch. All lanes of Lower Azusa Road are closed between Pal Mal Avenue and Persimmon Avenue. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor EL MONTE - Fire investigators and El Monte building inspectors are examining a fire at the former site of a highly-controversial church Sunday morning.
The fire burned in a one-story commercial building at 2600 Tyler Ave. Firefighters were dispatched at 8:54 a.m. March 6. The fire, which burned in some façade on the street-side of the structure, was knocked down at 9:18 a.m., according to Dispatch Supervisor Jeremy Stafford of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The building apparently used to house the First Works Baptist Church, whose pastor was known for anti-gay rhetoric. Two people were caught on grainy security video January 23, 2021 as they ignited an object that caused a fire inside the building. The building apparently now houses a different church, according to Lt. Pete Rasic of the El Monte Police. “I think it is a Christian church. I think it’s a church that’s new to the building,” Rasic told SGV CityWatch. A quick Google search shows Celestial Church of Christ LA Mother Parish as occupying the address, however the City of El Monte business directory still lists First Works Baptist Church at the location. Preliminarily, the cause may be electrical, Rasic told SGV CityWatch. One person inside the church was displaced, Stafford told SGV CityWatch. Fire Captain Steven McCann from Los Angeles County Fire Station 166 passed away February 9. “We extend our deepest condolences and prayers to the entire McCann family during this difficult time,” according to a social media statement from the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The department’s Memorial Management Team and PEER Support Team were activated to ensure proper care for all family members to support those in need, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. A medical emergency was dispatched at Fire Station 166, 3615 Santa Anita Ave., around 9:30 p.m. First responders were told of a firefighter in cardiac arrest. CPR was performed and the patient was transported with a police escort and unobstructed roads to Arcadia Methodist Hospital. McCann was declared dead at the hospital.

EL MONTE - The pilot of a small plane landed his aircraft in the Santa Anita Wash October 10 after possibly experiencing engine trouble.
The pilot landed in the Santa Anita Wash area closest to the San Gabriel Valley Airport, 4233 N. Santa Anita Ave. around 5:07 p.m., after experiencing issues roughly five minutes prior. Air traffic control at San Gabriel Valley Airport called Los Angeles County Firefighters to the scene, but the pilot was uninjured. “Operations, just be advised we had an experimental aircraft flew down in the wash. There appears to be no injuries. The pilot had reported he is fine,” according to air traffic control radio transmissions. The plane is an experimental Tucano Replica fixed wing aircraft built and owned by Robin Langhofer. Jan’s Towing arrived to lift the aircraft to the road. Listen to the audio below: |
