First responders were sent to the location just before 5:30 a.m. Thursday, November 9. The No. 5, 6 and 7 Lanes are shut down until at least 7 a.m. until the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner arrives, according to the California Highway Patrol. Prior to the crash, there were numerous reports of a man with a backpack nearly being struck while walking near the slow lane of the west I-10 freeway. The pedestrian was finally struck and went down in the No. 4 lane, according to CHP traffic logs. Officers were called just before 9 p.m. to a male down and bleeding in the street at El Monte Avenue and Lower Azusa Road. The male was declared dead at the scene by Los Angeles County firefighters, according to Lt. Doug Knight of the El Monte Police Department. The bicyclist was identified as 59-year-old Ruben Vicario, an El Monte man. He died of blunt trauma. His death was ruled accidental, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. The suspect vehicle is possibly a red or burgundy 2019 or 2021 Toyota sedan. The male was declared dead at the scene by Los Angeles County firefighters, according to Lt. Knight of the El Monte Police Department. The suspect driver did not remain at the scene. The description of the driver and vehicle are not available, Knight told SGV CityWatch. All lanes of Lower Azusa Road are closed between Pal Mal Avenue and Persimmon Avenue. All lanes of El Monte Avenue are closed between Lower Azusa and Douglas Street, Knight told SGV CityWatch. Officers found the unconscious victim down in the area of Durfee Avenue and Denholm Drive around 4:33 a.m. October 19. He was transported to a hospital and as of Tuesday morning was listed in critical condition, according to Lt. Knight of the El Monte Police Department. An updated status on the victim’s condition is not yet publicly known. As of Tuesday morning, the incident is being investigated as a hit and run crash, Knight told SGV CityWatch in a Tuesday night interview. It is unclear if any arrests have been made. Police and firefighters responded to a crash in the 2600 block of Mountain View Road around 7:30 p.m. Officers found five injured people and one male driver with a gunshot wound. He died at the scene, according to Lt. Doug Knight of the El Monte Police Department. The male driver was found bleeding from a head wound. A handgun was recovered inside the crashed vehicle. A female passenger exited the vehicle before the crash, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. The passenger was hospitalized for injuries considered not-life threatening. The wounded driver crashed into another vehicle occupied by four people: a pregnant mother, father and two children. All were hospitalized as well. “Although the preliminary investigation reveals that the deceased male possibly suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound prior to the collision, it is being treated as a suspicious death investigation. The cause of death will be determined by the coroner’s office,” the Sheriff’s Information Bureau said. Two people were hospitalized with critical injuries and two received minor injuries, according to dispatch supervisor Michael Pittman of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. County firefighters and El Monte Police officers were called to the 2600 block of Mountain View Road, Pittman told SGV CityWatch. Although evidence suggests the male killed was driving when he was shot, investigators have yet to confirm it, according to Lt. Doug Knight of the El Monte Police Department. “We do have one confirmed gunshot victim who has been pronounced deceased,” Knight told SGV CityWatch. “He was the driver of the vehicle.” Mountain View Road and Elliott Avenue are closed in all directions as the investigation continues, Knight told SGV CityWatch. What led to the shooting is not yet known. Police received numerous calls of a collision between a vehicle and bicyclist at 6:45 a.m. Officers and Los Angeles County firefighters responded. Firefighters determined the man was dead at the scene, according to Lt. Pete Rasic of the El Monte Police Department. The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators, Rasic told SGV CityWatch. The closure is affecting southbound lanes of Peck Road at Emery Street. The police cruiser occupied with two officers crashed while exiting onto Del Mar Avenue from the west I-10 freeway May 7. The officers suffered minor injuries, according to Lt. Richard Luna of the El Monte Police Department. The officers attempted to stop the driver of a silver Hyundai, possibly a Sonata, for allegedly running a red light at Ramona Boulevard and Peck Road around 4:52 a.m. The driver refused to stop, Luna told SGV CityWatch. The silver Hyundai was reported stolen, Luna told SGV CityWatch. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. A crash between a Cadillac sedan and a Toyota 4Runner occurred on Santa Anita Avenue north of Valley Boulevard around 7:15 p.m. The 4Runner was southbound and apparently crossed over the median before colliding with the Cadillac, according to the El Monte Police Department. The four inside the Cadillac sedan apparently only suffered minor injuries. They were all hospitalized. The driver of the 4Runner was alone in the vehicle. El Monte Police announced just before 4:30 a.m. that road closures were ended. Investigators are seeking an Asian man who is 30 to 40 years old, stands 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighs 175 pounds, has black hair and brown eyes, according to the El Monte Police Department. The suspect also wore a brown plaid long-sleeve shirt and black pants. The described suspect drove a black four-door 2005 to 2015 Toyota Tacoma (SR5), which sported mud flaps, a chrome rear bumper, El Monte Police said. The rider, identified as 56-year-old John Spata, died soon after being struck at 7 p.m. near Lower Azusa Road and Peck Road. The collision was caught on nearby surveillance camera. Spata was westbound on Lower Azusa Road. The truck driver was traveling eastbound, failed to yield to oncoming traffic and made a left turn into the driveway of Shell Gas, 4801 Peck Rd. The driver of the truck appeared to intentionally drive in the path of Spata before striking him and fleeing, according to the El Monte Police Department. Spata was forced to lay the bike down and he slid into the moving truck, which was driven away from the scene, El Monte Police said. A second vehicle described as a white sedan may have run over Spata after the initial collision, El Monte Police said.
