Union Pacific Railroad Police are investigating the collision, but the woman was struck on the tracks about one-quarter mile east of Arden Drive, which is west of Santa Anita, according to Lt. Christopher Cano of the El Monte Police Department. The woman was taken to County/USC Medical Center in Los Angeles where she remains stable. Cano said the railroad right-of-way is used as a common thoroughfare for people to trek. It is unclear if the woman is transient or not. The collision occurred at the tracks near Arden Drive at 6:02 p.m. Two people were struck by a train and are working on transporting the patients, according to Dispatch Supervisor Melanie Flores of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. It is unclear if the pedestrians were struck on Arden Drive or elsewhere along the tracks. One of the victims, a female, was being taken by ground ambulance to County/USC Medical Center in Los Angeles. It is unclear if the train was hauling freight or passengers. The railroad tracks service both Union Pacific freight and Metrolink traffic. Police received a 9-1-1 call around 7 p.m. that a man was walking around armed and threatening family members. When patrol officers arrived and found him, the SWAT team and crisis negotiators were summoned, according to Lt. Pete Rasic of the El Monte Police Department. The man surrendered without incident and was given a mental evaluation at a local hospital, Rasic. No shots were fired and no one was injured. It was unclear if the firearm was recovered. Detectives were still working at the scene hours after the incident concluded. Loi Tran, 39, was arrested by El Monte Police the day of the murder, September 16. Tran is being held without bail, according to Los Angeles County booking records. Tran was initially detained by El Monte Police, who arrived on scene after being called to a stabbing in the 10500 block of Lower Azusa Road just before 12:30 p.m. The victim was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead. The unidentified Asian victim is married to Tran’s sister, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. The victim and Tran were involved in an ongoing family dispute. Tran is scheduled to appear in Rio Hondo Municipal Court Tuesday, September 18. A man was found by responding El Monte Police officers, suffering from multiple stab wounds to his upper torso in the 10500 block of Lower Azusa Road just before 12:30 p.m. September 16., according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. The man was taken to an area hospital and later pronounced dead, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau detectives said. “A male adult was located and detained without incident at the location, who may have been involved in the crime,” the Sheriff’s Information Bureau said. The presumed murder weapon was recovered at the scene. Although related, how the suspect and victim are specifically related is not known. The stabbing victim was reported in the 10500 block of Lower Azusa Road around 12:32 p.m. The patient was taken to a local hospital for treatment, according to Dispatch Supervisor Martin Rangel of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The victim was later pronounced dead after being hospitalized, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. No further information is available. It is unclear if the fire was accidental or intentional. El Monte detectives are investigating along with Los Angeles County Fire arson investigators and the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner, according to Detective Sergeant Richard Luna of the El Monte Police Department. The camp fire was reported at 3:01 a.m. September 9 in an empty field flanked by trees about 300 yards east of the El Monte Station, nestled between the I-10 freeway and the Metrolink railroad tracks. The fire was extinguished but no body was found at the time, Luna said. A transient concerned about the well-being of a woman who frequented the camp asked for help in searching the area, Luna said. Los Angeles County Firefighters responded back to the location, close to 10166 Olney St., around 10:48 a.m., searched the burned wreck and found an unrecognizable body. “A lot of transients hang out in the area,” Luna said. “Its not uncommon for transients to live in the vacant lot.” El Monte detectives are waiting for investigations from the Coroner and Los Angeles County Fire arson investigators to determine how the victim died. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s investigators were called as a matter of protocol, but are not investigating the death yet, Luna said. |
