Written by AARON CASTREJON | CityWatch Editor EL MONTE - A woman suffered severe bodily burns after being hit with a “caustic liquid,” authorities said Saturday morning.
The woman was found by officers responding to a report of a woman screaming for help in the 3600 block of Durfee Avenue around 1:30 a.m. The woman was found in a driveway, suffering from burns generated from an unknown chemical, according to Lt. Ernie Cramer of the El Monte Police Department. “We don’t know what the chemical is. It’s some type of acid, we think,” Cramer said. The suspect is still outstanding. No description is available. The woman is hospitalized at County/USC Medical Center. Investigators from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Bureau Tactical Hazmat Team and the Sheriff’s mobile laboratory are still on scene trying to determine the type of chemical used in the attack. Officers are unclear as to the relationship between the woman and suspect. The victim was found in the middle of Maxson Road and Deana Street around 10:46 a.m. Officers found the victim while responding to two calls of gunfire in the area, according to Lt. Ernie Cramer of the El Monte Police Department. The victim was conscious and talking with officers and medics. He is expected to survive his wounds, Cramer said. Medics from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Bureau treated and transported the victim. The fire burned in the vacant building at 3342 N. Santa Anita Ave. Firefighters were dispatched to the one-story commercial structure fire, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Firefighters requested a second-alarm response for additional units to fight the flames. No injuries were reported. Vanessa Rodriguez, 33, was outside the facility on an approved pass and failed to return Saturday evening to the HealthRIGHT 360 transitional facility, 11100 Valley Blvd., according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. Rodriguez was received by corrections officials September 28, 2017 from Los Angeles County to serve a three-year sentence for false impersonation. She had been participating in ACP since May 2018 and was expected to be released in July 2018, according to the CDCR. Rodriguez is Hispanic, 5 feet 2 inches tall, 134 pounds, has brown hair and brown eyes. Anyone who knows the whereabouts of Rodriguez is urged to call 9-1-1. |
