Written by AARON CASTREJON | CityWatch Editor GLENDORA - A reckless driver spotted on Glendora Mountain Road refused to stop for officers and led them on a nine-mile chase to the 10 freeway Saturday morning.
An officer spotted the driver on Glendora Mountain Road around 12:14 p.m. and attempted a traffic stop of a white 1992 Honda Civic, but the driver refused to yield, according to Lt. James DeMond of the Glendora Police Department. The driver, Cesar Efran Figueroa Jr., 22, led police on a reckless pursuit on city streets through Glendora and into Azusa where the pursuit entered the westbound 210 freeway, DeMond said. Figueroa also reportedly drove in opposing lanes of traffic while evading officers, according to Lt. Mike Randazzo of the Glendora Police Department. The pursuit entered the south 605 freeway and the driver eventually stopped after 15 minutes and surrendered near the I-10 freeway, DeMond said. Figueroa was booked on suspicion of felony reckless evading, driving on the opposite side of a divided highway and excessive speed, Randazzo said. Figueroa is being held in lieu of $75,000 bail at the Inmate Reception Center in Los Angeles, awaiting a scheduled appearance in the West Covina Courthouse September 18. The driver of the car stolen from Irvine refused to stop for Glendora offices after they noticed the older-model vehicle had paper plates at Gladstone Street and Barranca Avenue, said Glendora Police Sgt. Mike Randazzo. The officer initiated the traffic stop around 8:30 p.m. The driver sped along surface streets came to a dead end in the 5900 block of Rockvale Avenue where both occupants ditched the stolen ride, Randazzo said. A search by Glendora Police, Azusa Police and San Dimas Sheriff’s deputies yielded the arrest of the driver, 28-year-old Abraham Roman-Hernandez, in the 18000 block of Alford Street. The driver was hiding in a resident’s yard, Randazzo said. Hernandez listed Azusa as his city of residence, Randazzo said. Roman-Hernandez was booked on suspicion of unlawfully taking a vehicle, felony evading police, possessing a controlled substance and delaying an officer. Roman-Hernandez is being held in lieu of $25,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in West Covina Superior Court September 17. The checkpoint, held as part of a nationwide Dive Sober or Get Pulled Over Campaign, is aimed at getting impaired drivers off the road while educating them on the dangers of driving under the influence, according to the Glendora Police Department. “Keeping our roads safe for those who live and work in the City of Glendora is a priority we take seriously,” said Glendora Police Chief Lisa Rosales. Funding for the checkpoint is provided to the Glendora Police Department by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The man was seen in the first floor women’s restroom in the Liberal Arts and Business building at Citrus, 1000 W. Foothill Blvd., around 10:40 a.m. The suspect left the area before Campus Safety personnel arrived, according to a written statement provided by Citrus College. No one was injured. The suspect is a white male, 20 to 25 years old, has short dark hair, has a slim build, stands 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighs 160 pounds. He wore a bluish green jacket, blue jeans and black suede tennis shoes with a yellow stripe and black laces.
