WEST COVINA - California Highway Patrol officers are canvassing the westbound I-10 freeway near Vincent Avenue after a driver reported a suspect fired a weapon Friday night. The CHP responded to the scene around 7:30 p.m. May 6. Freeway lanes near Azusa Avenue are also being checked, according to Officer Stephan Brandt of the California Highway Patrol. Brandt did not have a suspect description, or vehicle description. CHP officers trained in detecting impaired drivers will be equipped with hand-held breath testing devices to measure the blood alcohol concentration of suspected drunk drivers. All vehicles will be checked, traffic volume permitting. If the volume becomes too heavy, every third or fifth vehicle will be checked to assure objectivity, according to the California Highway Patrol. Funding for this checkpoint was possible through a grant provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Noe L. Manzanarez was driving a 2022 Toyota Camry eastbound on the 210 freeway west of Azusa Avenue around 12:02 a.m. April 27 in the No. 1 lane. He crashed into the rear of a 2019 Nissan Sentra that was stopped due to heavy traffic, according to the California Highway Patrol. The still-unidentified female driver of the Nissan Sentra died at the scene. A 2007 Ford F-350 was hit on the left side by one of the vehicles in the first collision. The F-350’s driver, a Rancho Cucamonga man, was uninjured, according to the California Highway Patrol. Alcohol is a suspected factor in the crash. All lanes, except lane No. 5, were closed for nearly several hours during the investigation. All lanes were reopened at 3:15 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. Manzanarez received minor injuries. He is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail at the Inmate Reception Center in Los Angeles ahead of a scheduled appearance in the Pomona Courthouse April 29. As many as two vehicles were involved in the crash that was reported just after midnight. One vehicle was allegedly being driven in excess of 100 miles per hour before crashing, according to California Highway Patrol radio traffic. As officers arrived on scene to the crash, they observed one vehicle already fully-engulfed in flames, according to the California Highway Patrol. One caller reported hearing the crash from their residence. Caltrans is en route to set up a closure. The robbery, estimated at $500, was reported around 10:15 p.m. at the unidentified store in the 1300 block of South Azusa Avenue. “One of the suspects immediately brandished a handgun from his waistband and told the employee to give him the money from within the cash register. The other two suspects grabbed other store merchandise before fleeing the location,” according to the West Covina Police Department in a written statement. The store employee was not harmed. Detectives believe the suspects fled in a vehicle, but have no description. Officers were called to a welfare check at The Colony, 301 S. Glendora Ave. around 3 p.m. April 7. The male was apparently a resident, according to Lt. Brian Daniels of the West Covina Police Department. The cause of death has yet to be determined. Coroner investigators arrived by about 7 p.m. to take possession of the body, according to Aimee Earl, investigator with the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. Benjamin Gutierrez, 57, was taken into custody March 24 by West Covina police detectives and the U.S. Marshal Service Pacific Southwest Region Fugitive Task Force. Gutierrez was booked on suspicion of lewd acts on a child under 14 years of age, according to the West Covina Police Department. Gutierrez was arrested at 6:37 a.m. and booked at 7:52 a.m. He is being held in lieu of $30p,000 bail ahead scheduled for an appearance in Pomona Superior Court March 28,according to Los Angeles County booking records. The driver is still listed as John Doe #63, according to Sarah Ardalani, public information officer for the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. The collision occurred near South Nogales Avenue and Amanda Avenue around 3:35 a.m. Firefighters arrived and found the driver trapped inside the burning vehicle. The fire was extinguished and the driver, the only occupant, was declared dead at the scene, according to the West Covina Fire Department. The cause of the collision is under investigation by the West Covina Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team. The shooting was reported around 3:16 a.m. in the 100 block of North Grand Avenue. The victim and two suspects became involved in an unspecified confrontation. One of the two suspects produced a handgun and shot the victim, according to Public Information Officer Alexus Napoles of the West Covina Police Department. Both suspects fled. Napoles did not have suspect descriptions available, nor a possible motive. The driver died at the scene of the crash at South Nogales Street and Amanda Street. Authorities were called to the scene around 3:35 a.m., according to the West Covina Police Department. Only one vehicle was reportedly involved in the crash and the unidentified driver was the sole occupant, according to the West Covina Police Department. The West Covina Police Major Accident Investigation Team is determining how and why the crash happened.
