CityWatch Editor WEST COVINA - A woman continues to recover after a stray bullet wounded one of her thighs July 4. It is unknown where the bullet was fired. No calls of gunfire were reported during the event and no one witnessed the gunfire occurring, according to the West Covina Police Department. First responders were called just after 9 p.m. The woman was seated with her family at the northeast baseball field at the West Covina Sportsplex, 2100 S. Azusa Ave. She felt an impact on her thigh, according to the West Covina Police Department. Security notified police on site. Firefighter paramedics treated and transported the woman. Hospital staff confirmed she was shot, according to the West Covina Police Department. “The preliminary investigation suggests the victim was struck by a stray bullet originating from an unknown location outside the fireworks venue, possibly from indiscriminate firing,” according to the West Covina Police Department in a written statement. Firefighters spotted the flames at 10:33 p.m. while helping to close down the city’s July 4 event at the West Covina Sportsplex. The fire burned in the undeveloped parcels of land between two drainage ditches near Fairgrove Avenue and Aroma Drive, according to the West Covina Fire Department. Police were called prior to the brush fire for separate reports of illegal fireworks being set off and for trespassers on the property where the fire occurred, according to the West Covina Fire Department. incidentally, West Covina firefighters were conducting drills in the same area Friday, June 30. The illegal fireworks, worth approximately$6,000, were handed to the West Covina Fire Department Arson Investigator for destruction, according to the West Covina Police Department. The drivers in possession of the fireworks were issued citations. |
