CityWatch Editor WEST COVINA - A West Covina cop was officially charged with multiple felony counts and misdemeanor counts, accused of looting cash from motorists dating back to last year. Jose Antonio Garcia, 37, was charged with one felony count each of misappropriation of public funds and grand theft by embezzlement and two misdemeanor counts of petty theft, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. Garcia, a Long Beach resident, was arrested November 24 by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Internal Criminal investigations Bureau. During a September 21, 2024 traffic stop, Garcia allegedly stole $600 in cash from the victim’s wallet during a search of the victim’s vehicle. The victim was also arrested at the conclusion of the traffic stop. November 23 of that year, Garcia allegedly store $100 from a passenger’s backpack during a separate traffic stop. Both driver and passenger were released with a verbal warning. During a February 8, 2025 traffic stop, Garcia allegedly stole $300 from the driver’s center console. “While we fully support due process, any criminal conduct by an officer, particularly involving theft or abuse of public trust, is unacceptable and undermines our mission. We are deeply concerned that an officer may have violated the public trust and the fundamental principles of policing. We are committed to ensuring accountability,” according to West Covina Police Chief Antonio Cortina. If convicted as charged, Garcia faces up to four years in state prison and an additional consecutive one-year jail term. He was issued a citation and released. CityWatch Editor WEST COVINA - Two Los Angeles men were charged with one count each of murder in the January 17 slaying of a La Puente man. Sonny Ruiz, 23, and Drygani Gonzalez, 24, were arrested May 2 by West Covina Police detectives in the killing of Michael Varela, 24, according to the West Covina Police Department. CityWatch Editor WEST COVINA - Three suspects implicated in a November 2024 double shooting were arrested, the West Covina Police Department announced recently. Keyon Wilkes, a 23-year-old La Puente man, Johnny Pardo, a 33-year-old West Covina man and Michael Turner, a 45-year-old Gardena man, are accused of a shooting at Tina’s Tavern, 328 S. Glendora Ave. November 9. Turner was arrested November 9. Wilkes was arrested December 12. Pardo was arrested January 18, according to Los Angeles County booking records. Turner was officially charged with one count of assault on a person with a semiautomatic firearm. He pleaded not guilty January 21, according to Los Angeles Superior Court records. Wilkes was charged with one count of assault on a person with a semiautomatic firearm, and two special allegations of use of a firearm and causing great bodily injury, according to Los Angeles Superior Court records. Wilkes posted bond January 17 and was released. Pardo’s case is still under review by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, according to the West Covina Police Department. Pardo posted bond and was released January 19. A reported argument led to the shooting which occurred around 11:30 p.m. November 9. First responders arrived to one victim wounded in a parking lot, another was found inside the bar. Both men wounded men were conscious while being loaded into ambulances. A white sedan was towed from the scene as evidence. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor WEST COVINA - Detectives are asking any possible victims of a man who has been a foster parent to come forward after his March arrest for suspicion of assaulting his foster child.
A 10-year-old girl told West Covina Police March 3 that her foster parent, 68-year-old David Diaz of West Covina, sexually assaulted her. Officers arrived and arrested Diaz, according to the West Covina Police Department. Detectives learned that Diaz had served as a foster parent for 18 years and believe there may be additional victims. Anyone who may have been a victim of Diaz, or has any information that can help with the investigation is urged to call the West Covina Police Tip Line at 626-939-8688 to leave a message. The case was presented to the Los Angeles county district attorneys office, which filed charges of Sex assault by force and sexual perversion with a child under 14 years old. Diaz remains in custody and is being held in lieu of $1.25 million bail. |
