CityWatch Editor WEST COVINA - One person died in a freeway crash New Year’s Day. The No. 3 & 4 lanes remain closed on the west I-10 freeway at Sunset Avenue. The crash was reported around 6:34 p.m. January 1. Preliminarily, a dark-colored sedan, described as either a Kia or a somehow lost control, struck another vehicle, struck the divider then stopped on the right shoulder, according to California Highway Patrol traffic logs. The dark-colored sedan started smoking and a Good Samaritan reported the driver was not moving. Additional callers heard the crash from nearby and called 9-1-1. At 7:18 p.m., the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner reported an estimated arrival of three to four hours. A Sig Alert was issued for the No. 3 & 4 lanes. The victim’s name will not be publicly revealed until next of kin have been notified. ********** Copyright 2025. CityWatch Editor WEST COVINA - An alleged armed motorist was arrested after chasing after another motorist while waving around a handgun, the California Highway Patrol said. The road rage occurred in the West Covina area on the west I-10 freeway. After being given a vehicle description, officers canvassed the area and located the suspect. A high-risk traffic stop was conducted and the driver was arrested. A loaded and concealed firearm was recovered at the scene, according to the California Highway Patrol. ********** Copyright 2025. CityWatch Editor WEST COVINA - Firefighters discovered the body of a driver inside a burned out, destroyed vehicle that crashed into a freeway structure early Friday. The crash occurred on the eastbound I-10 freeway at the Pacific Avenue off ramp. First responders were sent at 3:49 a.m. September 26 and found an engulfed vehicle heavily damaged. Images from the scene showed the vehicle absolutely engulfed by flames, damage rendering the vehicle virtually unrecognizable. “Fire Personnel extinguished the fire to find a solo occupant deceased within the vehicle,” according to the West Covina Fire Department in a written statement. No other vehicles were found at the scene and it is believed this was a solo collision, according to the West Covina Fire Department. CityWatch Editor WEST COVINA - At least one person is dead after a vehicle crashed into the right shoulder wall from the Barranca Avenue on-ramp to the westbound I-10 freeway early Saturday morning. The westbound on ramp from northbound Barranca Avenue will be closed for up to three hours, according to the California Highway Patrol. West Covina firefighters were sent to the crash just before 4:30 a.m. Saturday, December 14. The cause of the collision is under investigation. Written by AARON CASTREJON
CityWatch Editor UPDATE: As of 7:45 a.m., all lanes are now open. WEST COVINA - At least one person died in a multi-vehicle crash on the eastbound I-10 freeway just east of Azusa Avenue early Saturday morning. Only the No. 5 lane is open. All other lanes remain closed until further notice, according to the California Highway Patrol. It is unclear how the crash led to the fatality, but after the collision involving a blue Toyota Camry, a semi and at least one other car, occupants exited their vehicles and were standing in traffic lanes with other vehicles coming in fast, according to California Highway Patrol traffic logs. The crash was reported to the CHP around 4 a.m. August 31. Debris apparently was spread across all lanes, necessitating a brief full lane closure of the eastbound side before law enforcement was able to open up one lane. CityWatch Editor WEST COVINA - Two suspects fled with a stolen Rolex watch during an armed robbery at Plaza West Covina Wednesday evening. The victim reportedly followed the suspects who escaped to the I-10 freeway westbound where one of the suspects allegedly fired a handgun near Pacific Avenue and scared off the victim, according to Lt. Matt Nelson of the West Covina Police Department. Police were called to the mall, 112 Plaza Dr., around 5:48 p.m. July 17. California Highway Patrol officers assisted West Covina police by shutting down westbound lanes of the I-10 freeway to canvas the pavement for spent shell casings to corroborate the shooting aspect, according to Officer Sean Lough of the CHP Traffic Management Center. The westbound side was shut down near Pacific Avenue just after 5:55 p.m. and remained closed for about an hour, Lough told SGV CityWatch. It is not immediately clear if any evidence was located on the freeway. Both suspects are described as a black males. They each wore a surgical mask, black hooded sweatshirt, black pants and have thin builds. Both suspects occupied a blue Jeep. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor WEST COVINA - A pedestrian was struck and killed while running in lanes of the westbound I-10 freeway at Vincent Avenue Monday night.
The California Highway Patrol received at least one report of what the caller described as a woman running across freeway lanes, causing vehicles to swerve. The pedestrian was struck by a red Ford Explorer, according to CHP traffic logs. First responders were notified of the collision at 10:14 p.m. Monday, April 15. The pedestrian, who has yet to be identified publicly, died at the scene, according to Officer Garcia of the California Highway Patrol. It appears the collision happened in the HOV lane. A Sig Alert was issued for the HOV and the No. 1, 2 and 3 lanes. By 2:16 a.m. the Sig Alert was canceled. Some officers still remain on scene for the investigation, Garcia told SGV CityWatch. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor WEST COVINA - Three suspects were caught in West Covina August 18, allegedly found with a handgun, cutting tools and seven catalytic converters.
A resident confronted three men who were reportedly taking his catalytic converter in the early morning hours in the 1100 block of East Foothill Boulevard in Upland. One of the suspects allegedly brandished a firearm and threatened to kill the resident, according to the Upland Police Department. The suspects fled in a Dodge Charger Hellcat, but were located by responding officers at Foothill Boulevard and Vineyard Avenue. The driver refused to stop and fled westbound on the I-10 freeway. The suspects fled into West Covina where the driver lost control while exiting the freeway and crashed. The suspects briefly fled on foot, but were captured. One suspect even climbed a tree to elude capture, but an Upland PD K9 convinced him otherwise. “The vehicle turned out to be stolen, had battery powered saws, and 7 catalytic converters inside. All three were booked on multiple felonies with bail enhancements,” according to the Upland Police Department in a written statement. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor WHITTIER - A high-speed freeway pursuit in West Covina that took to surface streets ended with the rider surrendering to California Highway Patrol officers early Friday morning.
A CHP officer attempted to pull over the rider for excessive speed on the I-10 freeway at Pacific Avenue just after 4:30 a.m. January 27. The rider refused to stop and took off westbound, eventually exiting onto Puente Avenue, according to California Highway Patrol radio broadcasts. After a very brief stint on surface streets along Merced Avenue and Baldwin Park Boulevard, sometimes doing 90 miles per hour, the rider entered eastbound on the I-10 freeway and then quickly exited, only to go westbound again. The pursuit made a brief appearance in El Monte on Garvey Avenue and Durfee Avenue, where the suspect entered the southbound 605 freeway all the way into the Whittier area. After escaping to surface streets in the Whittier area, the rider decided to stop and surrendered to officers in the area of Slauson Avenue and Norwalk Boulevard. WEST COVINA - California Highway Patrol officers are canvassing the westbound I-10 freeway near Vincent Avenue after a driver reported a suspect fired a weapon Friday night. The CHP responded to the scene around 7:30 p.m. May 6. Freeway lanes near Azusa Avenue are also being checked, according to Officer Stephan Brandt of the California Highway Patrol. Brandt did not have a suspect description, or vehicle description. |
