The incident occurred some time before 5 p.m. in the area of Wednesday Drive and Hawaii Street Monday, November 26. Police surrounded the home after being told the armed intruder was possibly still inside, according to Lt. Pete Benschop of the West Covina Police Department. Benschop was not sure if the occupants of the home hid when the suspect entered, or fled. The West Covina SWAT team arrived to the scene and aided in evacuations of some surrounding homes to secure the area. Once the home in question was searched after a few hours, police found the suspect likely fled before they arrived, Benschop said. Benschop did not have a suspect description. Police responding to reports of a shooting found the 17-year-old boy suffering g from multiple gunshot sounds at the park, 2121 Shadow Oak Dr. Attempts to resuscitate the boy were unsuccessful, according to the West Covina Police Department. The victim was identified as Rene Emilio Gonzalez of La Puente, according to Investigator Rudy Molano of the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner.
An adult male and adult female received non-life-threatening wounds and were taken to a nearby hospital, West Covina Police said. Police did not divulge if detectives have a suspect or vehicle description available. Anyone with information on the shooting is urged to call the West Covina Police Department at 626-939-8688. Derek Pena, 21, was found in his residence and arrested without incident after West Covina detectives were busy determining the source of a threat and video regarding South Hills High School, West Covina Police said. The unspecified threat and video surfaced November 8, one day after detectives were determining the source of additional threats, the latter deemed non-credible, West Covina Police said. The November 7 threats of violence detailed a potential school shooting, West Covina Police said. It is unclear who perpetrated the November 7 threats. Pena was booked on suspicion of making criminal threats and is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail. The woman was struck by a vehicle that was driven into the northeast corner of Amar Road and Nogales Avenue around 6:45 p.m. October 31. CPR efforts were made, but the woman died at the scene, according to Cpl. Rudy Lopez of the West Covina Police Department. The 74-year-old Arizona woman behind the wheel of the 2004 Saturn Ion that struck the victim was hospitalized for undisclosed injuries. The driver was northbound on Nogales Avenue and went through the intersection when the vehicle was driven to the northeast portion of the intersection where the victim was waiting at a bus stop, Lopez said. The crash is being investigated by the West Covina Police Major Accident Investigation Team. |
