CityWatch Editor WEST COVINA - An arson suspect was arrested Thursday, accused of igniting a fire at a street side electrical conduit box. Firefighters were sent to East Vine Street and Hollenbeck Avenue just before 3 p.m. Thursday, August 29. An investigation led firefighters to a suspicion of arson, according to the West Covina Fire Department. West Covina arson investigators and police officers arrived and a suspect was soon identified, located and arrested. Arrested was 34-year-old Christopher Delon Fleytas. He was booked on suspicion of arson, possession of an incendiary device and possession of methamphetamine. He also had an outstanding warrant for inflicting corporal injury on a spouse, according to the West Covina police department. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor WEST COVINA - Police and arson investigators are continuing to investigate a fire that ignited inside a boys bathroom at South Hills High School Friday afternoon.
As of Saturday morning, no arrests have been made. No one was detained the day of the fire, according to Lt. Matt Nelson of the West Covina Police Department. First responders were sent to the school, 645 S. Barranca St., around 1:50 p.m. Friday, April 12. West Covina firefighters remained on scene for a little more than two hours to determine the cause. “It was contained in the boys restroom, there was no structural damage. They were trying to figure out the cause of it, which is inconclusive at this point,” Nelson told SGV CityWatch. Students were evacuated as a precaution. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor WEST COVINA - A domestic violence suspect will also be booked on suspicion of attempted arson and attempted murder of a police officer after allegedly attacking a female inside a home and throwing gasoline and ignited objects at police. Nicholas Isidro Misquez, 48, kept police and SWAT officers at bay for 10 hours and 34 minutes, according to Cpl. Rudy Lopez of the West Covina Police Department. The incident unfolded around 12:10 a.m. January 3 after a man called the West Covina Police Department to report a disturbance in his residence. Officers arrived to the 1300 block of West Bainbridge Avenue and found an injured woman, Lopez said. Officers learned the suspect barricaded himself in the attic after attempts to speak with him failed. “When officers approached the area of the attic, the suspect opened the attic door and began pouring gasoline out, striking the officers and then threw ignited items at them,” Lopez said in a written statement.
Several residents near the scene were evacuated. Officers deployed chemical agents into the attic after the suspect refused to speak with police. The suspect broke through the attic and climbed onto the roof, Lopez said. At 10:44 a.m. the suspect surrendered. Misquez was taken to a mental health facility for an evaluation and upon release he will be booked on suspicion of domestic violence, attempted arson and attempted murder of a police officer. he also has several outstanding warrants. His bail will be set at $450,000. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor WEST COVINA - A man armed with two knives kept police at bay for eight hours after allegedly threatening the resident of a home Monday, police said. Officers arrived to the home in the 3400 block of Willow Glen Lane at 6:51 a.m. January 7 after a resident called 9-1-1. Officers saw the suspect inside the home carrying knives, waking from room to room, according to Cpl. Rudy Lopez of the West Covina Police Department. After several hours of being unable to contact the suspect, the West Covina SWAT team responded to the scene at 11:30 a.m. Surrounding homes were evacuated, Lopez said.
Tear gas was deployed around 2:40 p.m. Officers then observed several small fires being ignited inside the home, Lopez said.
West Covina firefighters were able to extinguish the flames with an escort by SWAT members. At 3 p.m., Abraham Jin Moon, a 30-year-old Santa Clarita man, emerged from the home and surrender to police, Lopez said. Moon was booked on suspicion of arson and criminal threats. He was booked at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in lieu of $250,000 bail. No one was injured during the barricade. |
