José de Jesus Barraza, 47, was arrested and is being held in a lieu of $900,000 bail. Barraza was a gymnastics coach and operated out of the community centers in West Covina, according to the West Covina Police Department. Authorities did not elaborate when the alleged assaults took place, or with how many potential victims. Barraza is being held in the West Covina jail ahead of scheduled appearance at the West Covina Courthouse August 8. West Covina detectives believe there may be additional victims that have yet to come forward. Few details are available on the stabbing. Officers responded to the 600 block of North Azusa Avenue Saturday to a reported stabbing around 7 a.m. A victim was located and transported, according to Lt. Brian Daniels of the West Covina Police Department. Investigators later identified a suspect who was taken into custody, Daniels told SGV CityWatch. A CityWatch reader passed by the scene around 8 a.m. Saturday and saw that the parking lot at the now shuttered Big Lots store was taped off by police for an investigation. It is not publicly clear if investigators have determined a motive for the stabbing. The severity of injuries is also not publicly known. The suspect’s name was not readily available. The suspect broke into a locked area at a business in the 500 block of East Vine Avenue around 3:23 a.m., according to the West Covina Police Department. Brian Miranda resisted arrested and hunkered down inside a unit at The Colony at the Lakes, 301 S. Glendora Ave. The West Covina Police Special Problems Detail ultimately took Miranda in custody, according to the West Covina Police Department. Officers were sent to the apartment complex around 3:43 a.m. Thursday, July 6, to a report of a disturbance and a man with a gun. Officers encounter a woman who was the apparent victim of domestic battery. Many streets surrounding of The Colony were blocked during the entire ordeal. Miranda was booked on suspicion of being a felon, in possession of a firearm, domestic battery, child endangerment, delaying and resisting a peace officer, trespassing and violating his probation, according to the West Covina Police Department. Miranda is being held without bail in the Inmate Reception Center in Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County booking records. Firefighters spotted the flames at 10:33 p.m. while helping to close down the city’s July 4 event at the West Covina Sportsplex. The fire burned in the undeveloped parcels of land between two drainage ditches near Fairgrove Avenue and Aroma Drive, according to the West Covina Fire Department. Police were called prior to the brush fire for separate reports of illegal fireworks being set off and for trespassers on the property where the fire occurred, according to the West Covina Fire Department. incidentally, West Covina firefighters were conducting drills in the same area Friday, June 30. The illegal fireworks, worth approximately$6,000, were handed to the West Covina Fire Department Arson Investigator for destruction, according to the West Covina Police Department. The drivers in possession of the fireworks were issued citations. Keoni Smith, 22, was arrested and booked on suspicion of felony vandalism. His tirade was caught on a customer’s cell phone as he destroyed a window at Red Robin, 428 Plaza Dr., and proceeded to paint the outside with blue spray paint. The incident was reported at 11:50 a.m. Monday, June 19. “The suspect … ate at the restaurant and failed to pay for his meal. When he was confronted by management, he became irate and exited the restaurant. After exiting, he began spray painting the restaurant’s wall and shattered one of the windows,” according to the West Covina Police Department in a written statement. Smith is being held in lieu of $20,000 bail in the West Covina jail ahead of a scheduled appearance in the West Covina courthouse Wednesday, June 21. The robbery took place outside Chase Bank, 455 N. Azusa Ave., just before Noon June 13. The suspect, only described as a Latino man, was decked out in a construction uniform, complete with an orange safety helmet and green neon vest. The operation was carried out by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Organized Crime Task Force. Several people were detained and during the search one pound of heroin for sales was discovered, as well as one pound of methamphetamine for sales, digital scales, packaging for illegal narcotics, handguns and ammunition were seized, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Of the weapons seized, one hand gun was reported stolen, one was deemed a “ghost gun,” one of the firearms had obliterated serial numbers and the others were unregistered weapons, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. The names of the two gang bangers arrested were not immediately available. Assisting the Organized Crime Task Force were the Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Bureau, Sheriff’s Major Crimes Bureau, Sheriff’s Custody Services Division, Industry Sheriff’s Station SAO team and the California Department Correctional Rehabilitation-North Kern State Prison personnel. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor WEST COVINA - A man from Victorville was booked on suspicion of felony DUI and vehicular manslaughter charges after allegedly crashing a vehicle into a flood control channel, killing his passenger, according to the West Covina Police Department.
First responders were sent to the crash at Valinda Avenue and Glendora Avenue just after Midnight April 23. Once first responders descended into the flood control channel, they found a passenger dead at the scene. Driver Jose Felix Tamayo-Juárez, 24, was evaluated for minor injuries and later arrested. He is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail, according to the West Covina Police Department. Roadways near the crash were closed for many hours but have since reopened.
