Brayan Castellanos-Matute, a 20-year-old Artesia man, was allegedly found naked in the victim’s bed after he broke in. The suspect fled before police arrived, but after collecting evidence and following investigative leads, police identified and cuffed him, according to the West Covina Police Department. Matute was booked on suspicion of residential burglary, and assault to commit rape. The incident unfolded around 3 a.m. in the 100 block of South Barranca Avenue. “The victim was awoken by the suspect, who was found to be naked in her bed. The victim was able to flee and contact the West Covina Police Department. Officers arrived, however, the suspect had fled. The suspect was unknown to the victim,” the West Covina Police Department said in a written statement. A search warrant was executed at 3 p.m. November 11 and Matute was arrested. He remains jailed in lieu of $1 million bail ahead of a scheduled appearance in the West Covina courthouse Monday, November 15, according to Los Angeles County booking records. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor WEST COVINA - A stabbing suspect was caught after fleeing the scene of a stabbing that left two injured Tuesday.
The stabbing was reported just before 9 a.m. at Gold’s Gym, 502 Plaza Dr., March 30. Witnesses said the suspect fled the scene in a vehicle, according to the West Covina Police Department. Both victims wound up at a local hospital. One was released and the other was last listed in stable condition, West Covina Police said. “Officers patrolling the area were able to locate the suspect in the vehicle in the area of West Covina Parkway and West Garvey Avenue,” according to the West Covina Police Department in a written statement. “The suspect was arrested.” Suspect Paul Quintero, 32, was booked on suspicion of attempted murder and is being held in lieu of $1 million bail. He is being held at the Inmate Reception Center in Los Angeles ahead of a scheduled appearance in the West Covina Courthouse April 2. No one has yet been found injured in the shooting that took place around 5:45 p.m. in the parking lot of Fairfield Inn & Suites, 3211 E. Garvey Ave. North, according to Lt. Tony Cortina of the West Covina Police Department. Initially, police believe the shooting occurred between the occupants of two vehicles, Cortina told SGV CityWatch. About 10 spent shell casings were recovered at the scene. The suspects are still outstanding. Vehicle descriptions were not available. Police responded to the scene around 10:30 a.m. August 28. There is no known motive, according to Lt. Jeff Munn of the West Covina Police Department. The stabbing occurred at the Sunset Square Apartments, 745 N. Sunset Ave. The parking lot had been taped off by police, according to an eyewitness. There is no suspect in custody, Munn told SGV CityWatch, adding that the suspect is known to the victims. Munn said not everyone stabbed received hospitalization, but wasn’t certain who was transported. No other information is available. The shooting took place on the westbound I-10 freeway east of Sunset Avenue August 19. A La Puente man in his 30s was taken to County/USC Medical Center to be treated for multiple gunshot wounds, according to the California Highway Patrol in a written statement obtained by SGV CityWatch. According to eyewitness reports, the victim drove to an apartment complex in the 200 block of North Sunset Avenue. The sedan was peppered with bullet holes, both on at least the passenger side doors and in the front windshield. There is no information available on the suspect, or suspect vehicle, the CHP said. Three people were shot at El Pescador Mexican Grill, 1125 W. West Covina Parkway at Midnight. A fight erupted in the restaurant parking lot and led to gunfire, according to the West Covina Police Department. An update on a possible suspect description, as well as the current condition of each victim was not available as of 4:50 a.m. Anyone with information on the shooting is urged to call the West Covina Police Tip Line at 626-939-8688. WEST COVINA - Eyewitnesses helped police track down a man accused of assaulting a woman during a road rage incident May 23.
The incident was caught on camera around 1:30 p.m. Saturday on northbound Azusa Avenue at Workman Avenue by a reader who supplied the footage to SGV CityWatch. The suspect exited his vehicle at the red light, exchanged words with the female driver and reportedly threw what was described as a hammer at her. The reader said the suspect then punched the woman afterwards:
“He [the suspect] assaulted a woman in a car. Witnesses that were in the area videoed it and we were able to locate that individual later and he was taken into custody,” said Lt. Jeff Munn of the West Covina Police Department.
Munn did not know the extent of the woman’s injuries, but believed they were not severe. Munn was unclear of a motive for the road rage. Arrested was Juan Esquivel, a 29-year-old West Covina man. He was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, Munn told SGV CityWatch. Esquivel is being held in the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles in lieu of $30,000 bail ahead of a scheduled appearance in court Wednesday, May 27. A 10-year-old girl told West Covina Police March 3 that her foster parent, 68-year-old David Diaz of West Covina, sexually assaulted her. Officers arrived and arrested Diaz, according to the West Covina Police Department. Detectives learned that Diaz had served as a foster parent for 18 years and believe there may be additional victims. Anyone who may have been a victim of Diaz, or has any information that can help with the investigation is urged to call the West Covina Police Tip Line at 626-939-8688 to leave a message. The case was presented to the Los Angeles county district attorneys office, which filed charges of Sex assault by force and sexual perversion with a child under 14 years old. Diaz remains in custody and is being held in lieu of $1.25 million bail. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor WEST COVINA - A man from the San Bernardino area was jailed March 4 after attempting to kidnap a 12-year-old girl on a skateboard, a West Covina Police lieutenant said. The incident occurred near the intersection of South Glendora Avenue and East Dalewood Street around 5:38 p.m. The suspect grabbed the girl’s arm and pulled her around a vehicle when a Good Samaritan heard the girl’s screams and intervened, according to Lt. Huston Clements of the West Covina Police Department. Police arrived and arrested Robert Patrick Govea, 35.
The girl complained of pain after having been grabbed by Govea, Clements said. Two other people accompanying the suspect were also arrested, but for unrelated charges, including warrants and public intoxication, Clements said. Govea was booked on suspicion of kidnapping, child annoyance and assault. He is being held in lieu of $100,000 ahead of a scheduled appearance in the West Covina Courthouse Friday, March 6. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor WEST COVINA - A domestic violence suspect will also be booked on suspicion of attempted arson and attempted murder of a police officer after allegedly attacking a female inside a home and throwing gasoline and ignited objects at police. Nicholas Isidro Misquez, 48, kept police and SWAT officers at bay for 10 hours and 34 minutes, according to Cpl. Rudy Lopez of the West Covina Police Department. The incident unfolded around 12:10 a.m. January 3 after a man called the West Covina Police Department to report a disturbance in his residence. Officers arrived to the 1300 block of West Bainbridge Avenue and found an injured woman, Lopez said. Officers learned the suspect barricaded himself in the attic after attempts to speak with him failed. “When officers approached the area of the attic, the suspect opened the attic door and began pouring gasoline out, striking the officers and then threw ignited items at them,” Lopez said in a written statement.
Several residents near the scene were evacuated. Officers deployed chemical agents into the attic after the suspect refused to speak with police. The suspect broke through the attic and climbed onto the roof, Lopez said. At 10:44 a.m. the suspect surrendered. Misquez was taken to a mental health facility for an evaluation and upon release he will be booked on suspicion of domestic violence, attempted arson and attempted murder of a police officer. he also has several outstanding warrants. His bail will be set at $450,000. |
