First responders were called to Glendora Avenue just north of Vine Avenue before 8:30 p.m. to an unresponsive pedestrian down in traffic lanes. A resident confronted three men who were reportedly taking his catalytic converter in the early morning hours in the 1100 block of East Foothill Boulevard in Upland. One of the suspects allegedly brandished a firearm and threatened to kill the resident, according to the Upland Police Department. The suspects fled in a Dodge Charger Hellcat, but were located by responding officers at Foothill Boulevard and Vineyard Avenue. The driver refused to stop and fled westbound on the I-10 freeway. The suspects fled into West Covina where the driver lost control while exiting the freeway and crashed. The suspects briefly fled on foot, but were captured. One suspect even climbed a tree to elude capture, but an Upland PD K9 convinced him otherwise. “The vehicle turned out to be stolen, had battery powered saws, and 7 catalytic converters inside. All three were booked on multiple felonies with bail enhancements,” according to the Upland Police Department in a written statement. José de Jesus Barraza, 47, was arrested and is being held in a lieu of $900,000 bail. Barraza was a gymnastics coach and operated out of the community centers in West Covina, according to the West Covina Police Department. Authorities did not elaborate when the alleged assaults took place, or with how many potential victims. Barraza is being held in the West Covina jail ahead of scheduled appearance at the West Covina Courthouse August 8. West Covina detectives believe there may be additional victims that have yet to come forward. Few details are available on the stabbing. Officers responded to the 600 block of North Azusa Avenue Saturday to a reported stabbing around 7 a.m. A victim was located and transported, according to Lt. Brian Daniels of the West Covina Police Department. Investigators later identified a suspect who was taken into custody, Daniels told SGV CityWatch. A CityWatch reader passed by the scene around 8 a.m. Saturday and saw that the parking lot at the now shuttered Big Lots store was taped off by police for an investigation. It is not publicly clear if investigators have determined a motive for the stabbing. The severity of injuries is also not publicly known. The suspect’s name was not readily available. Brian Miranda resisted arrested and hunkered down inside a unit at The Colony at the Lakes, 301 S. Glendora Ave. The West Covina Police Special Problems Detail ultimately took Miranda in custody, according to the West Covina Police Department. Officers were sent to the apartment complex around 3:43 a.m. Thursday, July 6, to a report of a disturbance and a man with a gun. Officers encounter a woman who was the apparent victim of domestic battery. Many streets surrounding of The Colony were blocked during the entire ordeal. Miranda was booked on suspicion of being a felon, in possession of a firearm, domestic battery, child endangerment, delaying and resisting a peace officer, trespassing and violating his probation, according to the West Covina Police Department. Keoni Smith, 22, was arrested and booked on suspicion of felony vandalism. His tirade was caught on a customer’s cell phone as he destroyed a window at Red Robin, 428 Plaza Dr., and proceeded to paint the outside with blue spray paint. The incident was reported at 11:50 a.m. Monday, June 19. “The suspect … ate at the restaurant and failed to pay for his meal. When he was confronted by management, he became irate and exited the restaurant. After exiting, he began spray painting the restaurant’s wall and shattered one of the windows,” according to the West Covina Police Department in a written statement. Smith is being held in lieu of $20,000 bail in the West Covina jail ahead of a scheduled appearance in the West Covina courthouse Wednesday, June 21. |
