The Jeep Patriot driven by a man accused of a carjacking in Baldwin Park was found in West Covina around 2 a.m. near Durness Street and South Sandy Hook Street October 12. The driver refused to stop for police and fled officers until crashing on northbound Glendora Avenue at Cameron Avenue, according to the West Covina Police Department. Two adults in the eastbound vehicle struck by the suspect were ejected and died at the scene. A child in the vehicle was hospitalized, West Covina Police said. Gracie Contreras, 53, and Edward Contreras, 55, were identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. Both were Covina residents. The 2010 Jeep Patriot was reported carjacked around 1 a.m. in Baldwin Park by a knife-wielding suspect at Hilda Solis Park, Baldwin Park Police said. West Covina Police began searching for the vehicle once officers were notified the Jeep was last seen entering the city. The California Highway Patrol Major Accident Investigation Team is investigating the crash. The driver of a white four-door sedan crashed into the k-rails before 10:20 p.m. September 24 in the eastbound I-10 freeway at Holt Avenue. It was not clear why officers were pursuing the driver.
One person was witnessed being detained at the scene, but it is unclear if this person was the driver. The No. 5 lane and the Holt Avenue off ramp were closed around 10:45 p.m. due to the crash, the California Highway Patrol said. The driver evaded Industry deputies into West Covina just after 10 p.m. The pursuit continued slowly onto Lakes Drive from Vincent Avenue. The driver stopped briefly and appeared to be giving up, but continued to drive until he finally surrendered near Regal Edwards Theater. The suspect finally surrendered without further incident. Two suspects were detained at the crash scene at East Francisquito Avenue and Puente Avenue in Baldwin Park. One male suspect ran on foot, but was caught soon after, according to Cpl. Rudy Lopez of the West Covina Police Department. West Covina officers tried to pull over the suspect vehicle at Sandy Hook Avenue and Fairgrove Avenue at 1:01 a.m. May 17 for a traffic violation, but the driver refused to stop, Lopez said.
The chase entered the I-10 freeway, but officers lost sight of the suspect vehicle, likely due to the high rate of speed, and the chase was cancelled. A Los Angeles County Sheriff’s helicopter soon located the suspect vehicle in Baldwin Park on city streets, still moving at high speed, Lopez said. While West Covina officers were en route to intercept the suspect vehicle, it collided with a white SUV, Lopez said. The suspect driver suffered a leg injury and a female passenger complained of pain, Lopez said. Two people were injured in the vehicle struck by the suspect driver. In all, two patients met trauma criteria, two suffered moderate injuries and one suffered minor injures, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The suspect is about to surrender, REGION - West Covina police are pursuing a stolen SUV in the Azusa area. The solo occupant is driving around traffic, using the sidewalk and rolling through red lights as the driver evades deputies. The chase reportedly began in the Pico River area. The chase is, at the time of this post, north on Azusa Avenue passing Arrow Highway. The unidentified driver casually drove at slow speeds from West Covina to Hacienda Heights, where he was arrested on suspicion of evading police and driving on a suspended license, according to Sgt. Keith Shishido of the West Covina Police Department. An officer attempted to pull over the driver around 12:10 a.m. May 11 near South Sunset Avenue and Cameron Avenue.
An Industry Sheriff’s Station deputy witnessed a lone West Covina officer in pursuit and joined until at least two other West Covina officers arrived, according to Sheriff’s radio traffic. The pursuit continued south on Sunset. At Las Tunas Drive and Orange Grove Avenue in Hacienda Heights is where the suspect was taken into custody. The chase was observed by California Highway Patrol officers around 3:30 a.m. as it sped east along the I-10 freeway. Before the CHP could take over the pursuit, the driver exited into West Covina, where the driver evaded officers on surface streets south of West Covina Mall, according to CHP radio traffic.
The crash occurred at West Merced Avenue and South Sunset Avenue around 3:45 a.m. Around 2,100 customers were initially without power. The pursuit driver was taken into custody. Police responded to a home in the 2800 block of East Hillside Drive just before 8:30 p.m. The resident was watching the five suspects live as they burglarized the home, according to Sgt. Michelle Figueroa of the West Covina Police Department. The suspects fled the scene just as officers arrived. The driver refused to stop for police and led them on a chase until the five suspects ran in the 1400 block of Hollencrest Drive, Figueroa said.
Police already had three arrested and decided to stop the search around 1 a.m. Arrested were Manuel Lagos, 23, Marcelo Bustamante, 25, and Claudio Donoso, 19. All three men claim to be from Chile. They were booked on suspicion of burglary, resisting arrest, receiving stolen property and possession of burglary tools. The pursuit began outside West Covina jurisdiction when a West Covina officer attempted to stop a vehicle without license plates. The driver sped off and recklessly led police on a chase, according to Sgt. Michelle Figueroa of the West Covina Police Department. Police attempted to stop the driver along Cypress Street at 5:13 p.m. The driver fled police at high speed, ran red lights and made unsafe lane changes during the pursuit, Figueroa said. The pursuit continued northbound on Grand Avenue in Glendora where the driver attempted to turn east on Dawson Avenue, but the driver struck a curb and knocked over a street sign at 5:17 p.m. Both suspects fled on foot, but vigilant residents helped police find the suspects, Figueroa said. Arrested were Marina Rosalyn Gonzalez, a 25-year-old West Covina woman, and Jaime Gerardo Rivera, a 34-year-old Covina man. Among the booking charges are grand theft auto, evading police, possession of methamphetamine, resisting or delaying a peace officer and possession of burglary tools. Gonzalez is being held in lieu of $75,000 bail. Rivera is being held in lieu of $25,000 bail, according to Los Angeles County booking records. Both suspects are scheduled to appear in Citrus Municipal Court West Covina Tuesday, December 18. |
