Firefighters have gone an estimated 60 to 80 feet into the flood control channel under the 60 freeway, but have yet to find the seat of the fire, according to the California Highway Patrol. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor BALDWIN PARK – The California Highway Patrol has scheduled a DUI checkpoint for an undisclosed location of unincorporated Industry and West Covina.
The checkpoint will begin at 7 p.m. CHP officers trained in detecting driver impairment will staff the checkpoint and use handheld breath testing devices on those suspected of DUI. Every vehicle will be checked depending on traffic volume. If traffic is heavy, every third or fifth vehicle will be checked to ensure objectivity, according to the CHP. CHP Baldwin Park Office Captain Susan Estrem said checkpoints tend to, “reduce the number of drinking drivers on the road, even though arrest totals do not rise dramatically”. The psychological aspect of knowing checkpoints are happening is a valued deterrent. “We advise the news media well in advance whenever a checkpoint is planned, since extensive publicity also is viewed as a legal safeguard,” Estrem said in a written statement. The unidentified pedestrian died at the scene. A Sig Alert was issued around 8:06 p.m. for the No. 4 lane. The checkpoint is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at an undisclosed location. A deputy on patrol witnessed a reckless driver drive through a red light at the intersection of Gale Avenue and Azusa Avenue eastbound. The deputy attempted to locate the driver to initiate a traffic stop and eventually found the suspect had crashed into a traffic light In the 18200 block of Gale Avenue, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. The suspect attempted to flee the crash vehicle as the deputy arrived on scene. The suspect apparently was armed. The deputy open fire, but did not strike the suspect. No one was injured in this incident. The suspect was hospitalized due to injuries sustained in the crash, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said. The suspect’s handgun was recovered at the scene. INDUSTRY - A major crime incident is being investigated in the area of Gale Avenue and Fullerton Road after an incident led to deputy gunfire Tuesday night. The suspect sustained injuries considered not life-threatening during a previous incident and was taken to a nearby hospital, according to Sgt. Armando Martinez of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Industry Station. The incident occurred in the 18200 block of Gale Avenue just after 7:30 p.m. February 16. It is not yet clear what led to the shooting. A traffic collision occurred minutes before the police shooting and is likely related to the shooting, Martinez told SGV CityWatch. A gun was reportedly recovered at the scene. A large contingent of the deputies from surrounding Sheriff’s stations are on scene assisting with maintaining the crime scene, as well as detectives from the Sheriff’s Operation Safe Streets bureau. The crash was reported at 6:17 a.m. on the west 60 freeway east of Fairway Drive, according to the California Highway Patrol. Possibly one other vehicle was involved in the crash that occurred that is affecting the HOV, No. 1 and 2 lanes. A Sig Alert affected the mentioned lanes, but has since been cancelled, the California Highway Patrol said. The vehicle became engulfed after a mechanical issue on the Fairway Drive on ramp to the eastbound 60 freeway just before 9 a.m., according to Dispatch Supervisor Ed Pickett with the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
The officer was hospitalized for precautionary measures, according to Officer Elizabeth Kravig of the California Highway Patrol. A Sig Alert has been issued for an unknown duration for all westbound lanes. None of the food has spilled from the semi, according to the California Highway Patrol. The crash was reported at 9:54 p.m., according to the CHP. An unspecified sedan may have been involved in the crash. Some impatient drivers are using the Fullerton Road on ramp to exit the freeway, the CHP said. Someone was seen fleeing the scene of the crash. A police helicopter was called to search, but the suspect has not been located. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor INDUSTRY - A Sig Alert has been extended until at least 3:30 p.m. after a trailer hauling 28,000 pounds of rims overturned on the eastbound 60 freeway off ramp at Azusa Avenue Tuesday. The container and chassis overturned around 11:30 a.m. The off ramp remains closed while the Sig Alert is active, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Two engines from the Los Angeles County Fire Department were called to the scene at 11:28 a.m., but it is unclear if any one was injured. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Industry Station is investigating the crash, the CHP said. The collision occurred near North Echelon Avenue and Pocono Street around 9:25 p.m. February 2. The victim, only described as a Hispanic man, was hospitalized and later declared dead, according to CHP officer Tony Polizzi. Polizzi did not have any indication the collision was a hit and run. |
