Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor INDUSTRY - A transient was booked on suspicion of arson of property Sunday after allegedly burning an American flag at a roadside memorial. Scott Kennard, 41, was spotted by a California Highway Patrol officer, and displayed what was deemed as out-of-place behavior as Kennard loitered at Valley Boulevard and Turnbull Canyon Road. “The CHP Officer saw the suspect grab the American Flag and shield it with his hand. Immediately, flames were seen erupting from the flag,” according to Deputy Juanita Navarro-Suarez of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
The flag could not be saved as it was consumed by flames. A new flag, however, was placed at the memorial. Kennard is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor INDUSTRY - Deputies arrested a man Sunday morning accused of burning a flag at a roadside memorial. The as-of-yet unidentified suspect allegedly torched the American flag at the David Marin Romero memorial plaque at Valley Boulevard and Turnbull Canyon Road May 12. The suspect torched the flag around 10:10 a.m. and was detained by deputies within minutes. A passerby witnessed the alleged arson and called deputies. The suspect walked away from the scene on Valley Boulevard before being detained, according to Lt. Marquez of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Industry Station.
Marquez did not yet know a motive for the arson. The plaque and flag honor fallen CHP Santa Fe Springs motor officer David Marin Romero, who was cut down in the line of duty Friday September 23, 2005. Romero was stopped at a red light on northbound Turnbull Canyon Road, prepared to turn left onto Valley Boulevard when he was hit from behind by a DUI driver at nearly 60 miles per hour. Romero and his motorcycle were ejected across the intersection. Romero died at County/USC Medical Center after being flown for treatment. |
