Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor GLENDORA - Four people accused of being part of a retail crime ring were taken into custody Tuesday after fleeing police after burglarizing a Kohl’s store of more than $1,500 in merchandise. Officers were called to Kohl’s, 1225 S. Lone Hill Ave., just before 6:30 p.m. on a reported theft in progress. Two suspects carrying a large quantity of merchandise fled into a waiting vehicle, which fled after officers attempted a traffic stop, according to the Glendora Police Department. The suspects fled on surface streets, speeding south on Lone Hill Avenue and east on Arrow Highway with Glendora officers following behind, helicopters from the Pasadena and Pomona Police departments joined the chase.
The pursuit ended in Ontario at a gas station. The driver and passenger were taken into custody, while two other passengers escaped on foot. A search with assistance of Ontario Police helped find the escaping suspects, Glendora Police said. Arrested were: 22-year-old Della Joyner from Colton 18-year-old Chyna Harris from Las Vegas 21-year-old Barnard Saddler from San Bernardino 24-year-old Melvin Odom from Las Vegas All four suspects were booked on suspicion of grand theft, organized retail theft, and conspiracy. Joyner was additionally charged with felony reckless evading and hit-and-run, Glendora Police said. Joseph Milan Kamzik, 37, from Moreno Valley, was arrested after he ended the pursuit at Foothill Church of Glendora, 901 S. Grand Ave. at 5:54 a.m. Kamzik was booked on suspicion of felony evading police, driving under the influence of drugs, possessing unlawful paraphernalia, an outstanding warrant and a parole violation, according to the Glendora Police Department. Police were called to Sam’s Club, 1301 S. Lone Hill Ave., sometime after 4 a.m. on a reported suspicious vehicle parked behind the business, according to Sgt. Ryan Layaye of the Glendora Police Department. “Officers attempted to contact the subject and he immediately fled,” Layaye said. A slow speed pursuit went through surface streets across Glendora, Azusa and Covina. Kamzik allegedly ran red lights, ignored stop signs and drove in opposing lanes, Layaye said. Kamzik was arrested without incident. Kamzik is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail at the Inmate Reception Center in Los Angeles. He is scheduled to appear in Pomona Municipal Court November 20, according to Los Angeles County booking records. The driver of the car stolen from Irvine refused to stop for Glendora offices after they noticed the older-model vehicle had paper plates at Gladstone Street and Barranca Avenue, said Glendora Police Sgt. Mike Randazzo. The officer initiated the traffic stop around 8:30 p.m. The driver sped along surface streets came to a dead end in the 5900 block of Rockvale Avenue where both occupants ditched the stolen ride, Randazzo said. A search by Glendora Police, Azusa Police and San Dimas Sheriff’s deputies yielded the arrest of the driver, 28-year-old Abraham Roman-Hernandez, in the 18000 block of Alford Street. The driver was hiding in a resident’s yard, Randazzo said. Hernandez listed Azusa as his city of residence, Randazzo said. Roman-Hernandez was booked on suspicion of unlawfully taking a vehicle, felony evading police, possessing a controlled substance and delaying an officer. Roman-Hernandez is being held in lieu of $25,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in West Covina Superior Court September 17. Glendora officers have just taken the final outstanding suspect in custody near Dodsworth Avenue and Meacham Avenue where the pursuit ended. Glendora Police arrived and almost immediately took the first suspect in custody, according to the California Highway Patrol. The second suspect eluded capture briefly after having shed a red hooded sweatshirt. Colton Police chased two men connected with multiple burglaries in their city, initially on the Interstate 10 freeway into the Pomona area just before 6 a.m. The pursuit wound its way back east into the Ontario area. The pursuit came back west on the 210 freeway into the Pomona area where the CHP Baldwin Park office joined in chasing the suspects, according to CHP radio traffic. The suspects, who were evading officers at more than 100 miles per hour at times, exited onto surface streets at Citrus Avenue and fled their vehicle on foot once they entered a cul-de-sac. The two suspects robbed a pharmacy at gunpoint in the 200 block of South Grand Avenue around 10:50 a.m. The men, described as Black and wearing nursing scrubs, fled in a white SUV, which was spotted by officers patrolling nearby, according to Sgt. Mike Henderson of the Glendora Police Department. Officers attempted a traffic stop, but the SUV sped away and eventually crashed into a guardrail while attempting to turn south on Citrus Avenue from westbound Foothill Boulevard, Henderson said. The suspects fled the still-rolling SUV. One suspect fled into an Azusa neighborhood, while the second suspect fled onto the Citrus College Campus, 1000 W. Foothill Blvd. Nearby Azusa Pacific University and Citrus College were both placed on lockdown during a search. The suspect who fled onto Citrus College was found within minutes on the south side of the Student Services building, which faces Citrus Avenue. The second suspect changed his clothing while hiding in the nearby Azusa neighborhood. He was caught by searching officers while he tried to blend in after walking out onto Citrus Avenue, Henderson said. The stolen medication, as well as two handguns were recovered from the SUV. Booking information for the suspects was not yet available. No one was injured in the crash. The rider was detained and arrested about 10:52 p.m. on southbound Lope Lane, which is south of Route 66. The pursuit began on the eastbound 210 freeway near Grand Avenue. The rider refused to stop and led the CHP east into Claremont and Pomona at speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour, according to California Highway Patrol radio traffic. The pursuit wound its way along Garey Avenue north and south in the Pomona area and west along Foothill Boulevard in La Verne before reentering the 210 freeway westbound. The rider exited north on Lone Hill Avenue in Glendora and found his way south into the neighborhoods on Lope Lane before fleeing on foot. The rider was almost immediately detained and arrested. Jeffrey Madrinan, 30, was arrested Tuesday after refusing to stop for police who were responding to numerous calls of a prowler in the area of Foothill Boulevard near Glendora High School. Madrinan, who may suffer from mental issues, was fleeing because he though he was being chased, according to Sgt. Marty Barrett of the Glendora Police Department. Glendora Police began receiving calls of a prowler around 11:57 a.m. Madrinan ran through numerous backyards and was seen on the grounds of Glendora High School, 1600 E. Foothill Blvd., near the tennis courts on the eastern side of campus. Officers located Madrinan who then led police on a two-block foot pursuit before he was arrested, Barrett said. Madrinan was booked on suspicion of prowling, resisting arrest and trespassing on school grounds. Additional booking information was unavailable. |
