The women were contacted by an Alhambra Police officer at a storage facility on the 2000 block of West Mission Road January 5 around 3:30 a.m. for a burglary investigation. The driver of a vehicle allegedly accelerated at an Alhambra officer, forcing the officer to open fire, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau. The driver was struck in an extremity. She crashed while turning south onto Sixth Street and struck a retaining wall, Sheriff’s homicide investigators said.
It appeared a storage unit at the facility was burglarized, Sheriff’s homicide investigators said. The passenger was injured in the crash. Both suspects, only described as Hispanic women, were hospitalized for their injuries. The crash occurred in the area of West Mission Road and South Sixth Street around 3:30 a.m. January 5. Alhambra Police could not provide more details. The investigation is now being handled by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau. The suspect, 46-year-old Juan Gabriel Miranda, was taken into custody with the use of less than lethal rounds when he briefly barricaded himself in his vehicle after the second police shooting, according to the Alhambra Police Department. No police officers, nor Miranda, were hit by gunfire. Officers were called to the 1900 block of South Primrose Avenue at 8:35 p.m. December 28 for a domestic violence investigation. Miranda drove away from the scene before officers arrived, but returned several minutes later. “Officers gave orders to the suspect to stop and exit his vehicle. A gunshot was heard as the suspect fled in the direction of officers, at which time an officer involved shooting occurred,” Alhambra Police Sergeant Edward Elizalde said in a written statement.
Miranda fled in his vehicle again and returned once more. A second police shooting occurred and Miranda briefly barricaded himself inside his vehicle until bean bag rounds were used to force Miranda to surrender, Elizalde said. Miranda was given a medical examination to clear him for booking in the Alhambra Police jail on suspicion of felony charges related to the domestic violence and assault charges on the officers, Elizalde said. Alhambra officers were called to the 900 block of West Ramona Road at 8:10 p.m. December 14 to investigate a suspicious vehicle and found the man shot within. He was declared dead at the scene, according to Marvin Crowder of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. There is no known suspect or motive. No injuries were reported after one suspect opened fire at a robbery victim who gave chase, according to Alhambra Police Commander Sean Heckers. Police were called to the restaurant in the 1200 block of West Valley Boulevard near South Atlantic Boulevard December 3 around 7:43 p.m. Cash from the restaurant and possibly some property from the restaurant’s patrons were taken. Police are still investigating who exactly was robbed, Heckers said. “There was some type of witness who saw people flee the area and there were some shots fired toward the victim that was following [the suspects],” Heckers said.
According to Alhambra Police radio traffic, officers located a weapon, possibly a pellet gun, in the 1200 block of South Marguerita Avenue, as well as some shell casings in the area. The suspects are males, possibly white or Hispanic, in their 20s or 30s. An Alhambra Police crime broadcast further described one suspect as wearing a blue jacket, black pants, a black and blue baseball hat and heavyset. He carried a black handgun. A second suspect wore a grey sweater, yellow construction jacket, grey sweatpants and a dark hat. He also carried a dark handgun. The suspects fled in an older-model white SUV. ABC7 Eyewitness news is reporting the deputy was not on duty when the shooting occurred in the restaurant, 2531 W. Valley Boulevard. The deputy was taken to County/USC Medical Center in unknown condition.

Zhong Qi Chen, 59, from El Monte, faces one count of murder with allegations that he personally used a handgun and caused great bodily injury and death, according to Paul Eakins of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. Chen pleaded not guilty at his appearance n Alhambra Superior Court November 26. Chen allegedly shot and killed Yining Xie, 58, on the property of The China Press, 2121 W. Mission Rd. Xie died from gunshot wounds to the head and torso, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. The shooting was over a dispute between the two, but the specifics of the dispute remain hidden. Chen was found and arrested at the scene, Alhambra Police said. Chen faces 50 years to life in prison if convicted as charged. Bail has been set at $6 million. He is scheduled to return to court December 18. Zhong Qi Chen was booked on suspicion of murder with a firearm, according to the Alhambra Police Department. Chen is accused of shooting his co-worker multiple times at the China Press offices, 2121 W. Mission Rd. just before 9:30 a.m.
A handgun was recovered at the scene.
Chen is being held in lieu of $1 million bail. His scheduled court date is November 20 at Alhambra Municipal Court, according to Los Angeles County booking records. The shooting took place at The China Press, 2121 W. Mission Rd. around 9:30 a.m. The victim died at the scene. It is unclear if the suspect was arrested at the scene. Detectives believe the incident stemmed from workplace-related violence, according to the Alhambra Police Department.
A handgun purportedly used in the shooting was recovered. A motive is not yet known, Alhambra Police said. Detectives believe there are no additional suspects. Officers responded to a home in the 600 block of South 6th Street around 11:20 p.m. on a 9-1-1 call from the resident stating he shot an intruder. Police found the suspect was shot in the upper body, according to the Alhambra Police Department. Detectives are trying to determine if the shooting is related to a domestic dispute earlier November 11 in which a man and woman were arguing with each other. Police responded to the same address about one hour earlier to the domestic dispute. The man and woman, whom detectives said were dating, agreed to separate for the night, Alhambra Police said. Alhambra Police have yet to announce if an arrest was made. |
