Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor CITY OF INDUSTRY - A man wanted for reckless driving was taken into custody after recklessly fleeing deputies late Thursday night.
The driver, identified as 24-year-old Carlos Barrera, was booked on suspicion of DUI, felony evading and assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, according to Sgt. Molina of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Industry Station. The pursuit began around 11:23 p.m. in the area of Hambeldon Avenue and Valley Boulevard, Molina told SGV CityWatch. Barrera was reportedly weaving across all lanes and refused to stop, according to Sheriff’s radio traffic. Barrera allegedly at first led deputies on an exceedingly slow pursuit, sometimes moving at 10 miles per hour. A deputy successfully used the PIT maneuver on Barrera, who then allegedly rammed the deputy’s patrol vehicle at Hurley Street and South Shipman Avenue, wounding him, according to Sheriff’s radio traffic. “He suffered swelling and pain to his left knee,” Molina said of the injured deputy. When the crash occurred, the deputy wound up halfway outside his damaged patrol vehicle, Molina told SGV CityWatch. As the pursuit progressed, Barrera allegedly increased his speed to around 60 miles per hour while slithering through residential and business areas. The patrol vehicle allegedly struck by Barrera was still operational, despite spraying engine fluid on the windshield, according to Sheriff’s radio traffic. After Barrera slowed down, deputies attempted two more PIT maneuvers, the third times the charm with the suspect’s vehicle becoming disabled at Temple Avenue and Greycliff. Barrera allegedly refused to surrender. Deputies fired pepper ball rounds to get Berrera to flee, Molina told SGV CityWatch. Barrera finally did surrender. The collision occurred as a driver was exiting the Chevron gas station, 221 S. Hacienda Blvd., around 7:51 p.m. September 23. The southbound motorcyclist collided with the front end of the vehicle, according to Lt. David Petrocelli of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Industry Station. The rider died at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center, Petrocelli told SGV CityWatch. The motorcycle rider has yet to be identified publicly. Next of kin has not been notified. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor INDUSTRY - Detectives are investigating two robberies that occurred March 8 in which a group of men took smartphones from their victims at gunpoint.
In both robberies, at least one suspect was armed with a handgun. The first robbery occurred in La Puente in the 400 block of Mayland Avenue at 8:47 p.m. Possibly four to five males took a smartphone at gunpoint. The suspects fled in what was described as a dark colored vehicle. The smartphone was being tracked, but the suspects knew how to turn off the tracking feature, according to Lt. James Long of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Industry Station. A second armed robbery occurred in Hacienda Heights at 9:17 p.m. The victim who was punched by at least one suspect, sought help at a nearby fire station, 2691 S. Turnbull Canyon Rd. One of the three suspects seen was armed. The suspects fled and a light-colored sedan, Long told SGV CityWatch. Long was not entirely sure if a cell phone has been taken in the second robbery, but a Sheriff’s crime broadcast stated that a smartphone had been stolen. It was not immediately clear if these two crimes were committed by the same group of men, Long told SGV CityWatch. A deputy on patrol witnessed a reckless driver drive through a red light at the intersection of Gale Avenue and Azusa Avenue eastbound. The deputy attempted to locate the driver to initiate a traffic stop and eventually found the suspect had crashed into a traffic light In the 18200 block of Gale Avenue, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. The suspect attempted to flee the crash vehicle as the deputy arrived on scene. The suspect apparently was armed. The deputy open fire, but did not strike the suspect. No one was injured in this incident. The suspect was hospitalized due to injuries sustained in the crash, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said. The suspect’s handgun was recovered at the scene. INDUSTRY - A major crime incident is being investigated in the area of Gale Avenue and Fullerton Road after an incident led to deputy gunfire Tuesday night. The suspect sustained injuries considered not life-threatening during a previous incident and was taken to a nearby hospital, according to Sgt. Armando Martinez of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Industry Station. The incident occurred in the 18200 block of Gale Avenue just after 7:30 p.m. February 16. It is not yet clear what led to the shooting. A traffic collision occurred minutes before the police shooting and is likely related to the shooting, Martinez told SGV CityWatch. A gun was reportedly recovered at the scene. A large contingent of the deputies from surrounding Sheriff’s stations are on scene assisting with maintaining the crime scene, as well as detectives from the Sheriff’s Operation Safe Streets bureau. A passerby discovered the body near Workman Mill Road and Crossroads Parkway just before 8:30 a.m. December 11, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Tactical medics with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Special Enforcement Bureau responded to the scene. It is not publicly known if foul play is the cause of death. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is now investigating. Two shootings occurred within the span of a few minutes. The first occurred at Gale Avenue and Hacienda Boulevard around 1:08 a.m. August 7. In Hacienda Heights. A second deputy shooting occurred in the 13300 block of Crossroads Parkway in Industry, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. The suspect’s condition has not been publicly shared. What led to the two separate shootings has not been shared. Deputies have just exited the flood control tunnels under Temple Avenue near Valley Boulevard after fresh, wet tracks left by the suspect disappeared. The suspect remains outstanding. Deputies originally tried to pull over the alleged DUI driver in the area of Temple Avenue and Baldwin Park Boulevard about one hour ago. The pursuit found its way to the northbound 605 freeway and eventually exited onto eastbound Live Oak Avenue where the driver evaded officers recklessly, driving on the wrong side of the road and running through stop signs through Baldwin Park. Deputies on the ground canceled their pursuit, allowing a helicopter to track the driver’s movements until he decided to flee from his SUV on foot and run into the San Gabriel River, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s radio traffic. The shooting occurred near Railroad Street and Azusa Avenue. Homicide detectives are investigating the circumstances behind the shooting. No deputies were injured, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. Industry deputies responded to the above location on a report of a person possibly hit by a train. Deputies discovered a man kneeling next to some railroad tracks. The man, armed with a knife, rose to his feet and lunged towards deputies, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. After being shot, the male was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor INDUSTRY - The driver of a vehicle that crashed at the end of a short-lived pursuit was taken into custody late Monday night, a Sheriff’s sergeant said. The driver is accused of burglarizing a sushi restaurant in Walnut at 316 N. Lemon Ave. around 10:40 p.m., according to Sgt. Davis of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Walnut/Diamond Bar Station. The unidentified driver was one of multiple suspects who evaded the Industry station deputies pursuing them, according to Sgt. Itani of the Sheriff’s Industry Station.
The pursuit began at the 60 freeway at Crossroads Parkway, Itani told SGV CityWatch. The pursuit driver crashed in the area of East Temple Avenue and Puente Avenue in La Puente around 11:05 p.m. It was unclear to Davis what may have been taken in the burglary. The owner was not available at the time to determine if anything was taken. Deputies were called to Los Angeles County Fire Station 43, 921 S. Stimson Ave., around 4:16 p.m. The man was taken to an area hospital and refused to cooperate with deputies, according to Lt. Chris Garcia of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Industry Station. Deputies were unable to obtain a suspect or vehicle description or how the man wound up with a gunshot wound. |
