Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor ARCADIA - A doorbell camera video showing a victim being dragged and assaulted Monday led police to a severely beaten woman inside a home. The victim was hospitalized for her injuries. Her estranged boyfriend, 27-year-old Robert Michael Mendez, was found and arrested within the home in the 1500 block of South Santa Anita Avenue and arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, kidnapping, false imprisonment and other charges, Arcadia Police said. Officers were sent a link of the assault around 2 p.m. September 30. The video was believed to have taken place in the area of Santa Anita Avenue and Camino Real. Detectives canvassed the area and narrowed the location to the 1500 block of South Santa Anita where the woman and suspect were found, Arcadia Police said. Additional information led detectives to believe the assault took place around 11:40 p.m. September 29.
“Investigation also revealed that the female victim had been held against her will inside the residence since late last evening,” Arcadia Police said. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor ARCADIA - Police are looking for a suspect who robbed a man who reported being robbed at gunpoint inside a home September 24. The crime occurred in the 1500 block of Highland Oaks. The victim was visiting friends at the home when the victim answered a person who rang the doorbell at 9 p.m. The person, an Asian man armed with a silver handgun, forced his way in, said Sgt. Kollin Cieadlo of the Arcadia Police Department. “The victim was forced to lay on the ground, had his hands tied behind his back and cash and some jewelry was taken from the victim,” Cieadlo said. The house where the crime occurred is in the process of being purchased, Cieadlo said.
The suspect was seen fleeing on foot north from the home. The friends the victim was visiting were gone from the home when police arrived, Cieadlo said. It is unclear where the victim’s friends went after the crime occurred and officers had yet to speak with them Wednesday to confirm or deny the story. Police are investigating the story as a legitimate crime, Cieadlo said. The suspect was only described as an Asian male in his 30s wearing a black hat. The vehicle was stolen from the Extended Stay America, 401 E. Santa Clara St., just before 5:30 p.m. The suspect was left alone in the vehicle with the keys while the victim went back to the room at the hotel, Arcadia Police said. The vehicle and suspect were gone when the victim returned. The suspect was only described as a white female with black hair and green eyes. The Arcadia Police Department supports the new effort from the Office of Traffic Safety that aims to educate all drivers that ‘DUI Doesn’t Just Mean Booze,’” the Arcadia Police said.
Nationally in 2016, 37,461 people were killed in motor vehicle traffic crashes, and 28 percent (10,497) died in crashes where a driver had a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) over the limit of .08. California reported 1,059 DUI deaths at .08 or above, Arcadia Police said. The California Office of Traffic Safety is assisting Arcadia Police with the checkpoint. The alleged sexual battery took place at the 99 Cents Only Store, 140 E. Duarte Rd. Just after 12:30 p.m. The investigating officer discovered the suspect reportedly recorded under the woman’s skirt without permission, Arcadia Police said.
