Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor ARCADIA - Authorities have issued evacuation orders for all residents north of Elkins Avenue and east of Santa Anita Avenue Sunday morning. Residents are advised to use Santa Anita Avenue as an evacuation route. Fort hose who need it, an evacuation center has been set up by the Red Cross at Santa Anita Park 285 W. Huntington Dr. Enter through Gate 5, Arcadia city officials said. The Bobcat Fire grew fast overnight as flames continued to burn through vegetation westbound and closer to foothill neighborhoods. The fire entered Chantry Flats and Big Santa Anita Canyon September 12 and has made significant progress towards the Mt. Wilson area. The fire is well established inside Chantry Flats. In Monrovia, authorities encouraged the occupants of as many as six residences on Cloverleaf Drive to voluntarily evacuate due to approaching flames. The Bobcat Fire has burned 31,991 acres and is still 6 percent contained. It continues to burn mostly north and south., according to the U.S. Forest Service
The fire is not wind-driven and is progressing through terrain and fuels, which have not burned in at least 60 years, the U.S. Forest Service said. Firefighters worked to protect structures in the Chantry Flats area. Sierra Madre authorities have instituted Red Flag parking restrictions along the following roads/areas: Mt. Wilson Trail, Churchill Road, Skyland Drive, Fern Glen, Fern Drive, Idle Hour, Canyon Crest Drive, Orange Drive, Woodland Drive, Brookside Lane, Sunnyside Lane, Yucca Trail, Holly Trail, Sturtevent ad Elm, Pleasant Hill, Old Ranch Road, Forest lane, Casey, Madre, Hermosa north of Carter, Auburn north of Grandview, Canyon Drive, Oakcrest, Carter, Mt. Wilson north of Mira Monte, Alta Vista, Vista Circle and Woodland. The Fire’s size is unknown, but engines from Arcadia are being assisted by Monrovia firefighters and the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Firefighters were dispatched to Peck Road Park, 5401 Peck Rd., at 8:44 p.m. Firefighters declared knockdown at 9:20 p.m. The fire’s cause is under investigation. |
