ARCADIA - A suspect accused of carjacking an older driver in Stanton Sunday afternoon was taken into custody while strolling through lanes of the 210 freeway at Baldwin Avenue after disabling a stolen minivan. The California Highway Patrol Baldwin Park Office began chasing the suspect in the Pomona area on the westbound I-10 freeway around 4:20 p.m. The suspect drove recklessly across all lanes, according to CHP radio traffic. The unidentified suspect began a road rage incident at the Katella Mobile Home Estates, 10800 Dale Ave., in Station around 1:30 p.m. The suspect abandoned his own vehicle and stole a red minivan from its female driver, according to Carrie Braun, director of public affairs and community engagement at the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. Orange County deputies could not locate the stolen van, which was identified to surrounding agencies, Braun said. The suspect, chased by CHP officers, drove at high speeds against red lights and sometimes in opposing traffic lanes. Officers on the ground decided to have only a helicopter track the suspect due to his dangerous driving.
The suspect sped through West Covina, Baldwin Park, Irwindale and the 605 freeway to the westbound 210 where he exited in Monrovia. The suspect abandoned the vehicle and fled into an occupied home near Norumbega Drive and Shamrock Avenue in Monrovia where residents fled in terror. He allegedly assaulted a woman inside and demanded a vehicle before fleeing into the red minivan. He escaped before law enforcement could arrive. A crash occurred as the suspect exited Baldwin Avenue in Arcadia when the suspect rammed a white vehicle twice. With the minivan disabled the suspect, he casually walked into an intersection and onto the 210 freeway, bringing traffic to a halt until CHP officers arrested him. Braun did not have booking information for the suspect.
