CityWatch Editor ARCADIA - Four people were arrested June 9, after allegedly attempting to establish residency at someone else’s home June 9. The four suspects were confronted by the homeowner who called police to report a possible burglary in progress in the 400 block of Walnut Avenue. During a physical altercation, the homeowner fired a handgun into the air in fear of his life. One suspect was arrested outside the home, the others fled in a vehicle, but were found and arrested, according to the Arcadia Police Department. Officers were called to the home around 11:45 p.m. The homeowner called police and said he could see people inside of the home. He confronted them as they exited, according to the Arcadia Police Department. Those involved in the physical fight were treated for minor injuries, according to the Arcadia Police Department. “Based on the preliminary investigation, it appears the suspects had taken over the residence, and were attempting to establish residency. All four suspects were arrested and charged with residential burglary,” according to the Arcadia Police Department in a written statement. Arrested were Uried Benitez, a 32-year-old man from Los Angeles; Stephanie Burwell, a 35-year-old woman from Baldwin Park; Phyllis Cheong, a 29-year-old woman from Los Angeles and Marisa Williams, a 31-year-old woman from Long Beach. Four masked suspects attempted to enter a closed, locked business where several people were still inside in the 100 block of East Santa Clara Street. One suspect used a weapon to shoot the glass and enter the business. One of the rounds fired into the business struck the victim in the leg, according to the Arcadia Police Department. The robbery was reported around 10:40 p.m. Friday, April 26. Once inside, the suspects robbed the victims and then escaped in a vehicle described as a newer model white or silver four-door sedan, possibly a Chrysler, according to the Arcadia Police Department. The officer shot the woman in the upper torso after she pulled a kitchen knife tucked in her pocket, raised it above her shoulders and advanced toward the Officer, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau. Arcadia. Police officers were called to a report of a person armed with a knife around 9:09 p.m. Saturday, August 12. The mother of the suspect called on her own daughter. During the investigation, the suspect was seen exiting the location. She re-entered that location only to exit one more time and she began advancing towards the officer. “The officer ordered the disturbing party to show her hands. She kept advancing toward the officer, and at one point, removed a kitchen knife from her pocket. She then began running toward the officer with the knife raised above her shoulders, holding it in a stabbing position. At this time, an officer-involved shooting occurred,” according to the Sheriff’s Information Bureau in a written statement. Officers rendered medical aid to the suspect until paramedics, arrived to continue treatment and transported her to a nearby hospital. Just before 11 p.m., authorities reportedly used a “flash bang” grenade, firing it into the home. The still-unidentified suspect then emerged and surrendered. Aerial video showed the suspect was hobbling as he left the home to a waiting pair of handcuffs. Police were called to a home in the 2500 block of Greenfield Avenue August 10 by a caller who said his brother was in the house and had a gun. Just after officers arrived, the suspect reportedly fired upon them. One officer was struck in the face, according to police radio traffic. The suspect continued to fire out of the home towards officers who began calling for shields and for mutual aid assistance from surrounding agencies. One officer suffered an ankle injury and was hospitalized. One woman, a family member of the suspect, was also shot. Her condition was not immediately available. A child was in the house as gunfire started. That child fled to safety. The suspect spoke with Arcadia Police dispatchers and with crisis negotiators to get him to surrender. He threatened that he was mixing two chemicals to cause an explosion and he wanted officers to enter the home to take out as many officers a possible, according to Arcadia Police radio traffic. The Arcadia Police Department posted a statement on Twitter Thursday morning: “A quick msg to say thank you to our community for your support and the agencies who responded to assist.” Agencies that responded include the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and police departments from Azusa, Glendora, La Verne, Baldwin Park, Monrovia and more. The wounded Arcadia officer was with the department for six months. He has three years of experience with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. A suspect remains barricaded in a home in the 2500 block of Greenfield Avenue, north of Live Oak Avenue. Authorities have been communicating with him to get him to peacefully surrender. According to police radio traffic, the suspect is threatening to cause an explosion by mixing chemicals together and is encouraging officers to enter to take out as many officers as possible. Arcadia Police originally responded to a home in the 2500 block of Greenfield Avenue around 5 p.m. Initially, a caller reported a family member entered the home with a weapon. As Arcadia officers arrived, someone inside the home opened fire, according to police radio traffic. An officer was struck in the face. Two other people were wounded: a female relative was shot and another person was hit by shrapnel, authorities said in a nighttime press conference. Officers were continually taking gunfire within the first minutes of arrival and requested shields and help from surrounding cities. Arcadia officers were called to the hospital, 300 W. Huntington Dr., just before 9 a.m. April 24. The victim had apparently been shot in the back. The victim was listed in stable condition Sunday evening at Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, according to Sgt. Ryan Mulhall of the Arcadia Police Department. It was not known where the shooting actually occurred. Officers were apparently given a vague description of the vehicle that dropped off the victim who is apparently not cooperating with the investigation. Lian Hui Yang was found standing in a driveway in the 900 block of Sunset Boulevard after police responded to a gunfire call around 10:06 p.m. February 17. A 17-year-old male was found wounded in one of his feet, according to the Arcadia Police Department. Yang and his 19-year-old neighbor allegedly began feuding earlier Thursday, but the fight was no reported to police. The feud continued that night. During the nighttime fight, the neighbor was helped by two friends: a 17-year-old and 19-year-old; the latter was not injured. The neighbor was allegedly punched in the head and complained of pain, according to the Arcadia Police Department. After being booked, Yang was transferred to the Inmate Reception Center in Los Angeles ahead of a scheduled appearance in Pasadena Superior Court February 22. Bertha Hernandez, 35, was identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. She died from a gunshot wound to the head. Hernandez was driving a black Mercedes Benz east on the 210 freeway when the shooting occurred near Baldwin Avenue. CHP officers were called to a collision and found the car had crashed into a sound wall, according to the California Highway Patrol. Hernandez was declared dead at the scene, according to the California Highway Patrol. The events leading up to the shooting are either unknown, or have yet to be publicly shared. ARCADIA - Sheriff’s homicide detectives are investigating what led to the shooting deaths of a man and woman Sunday morning. The deaths were discovered in the 600 block of Huntington Drive just after 11 a.m. September 5. Investigators have not yet shared if this is possibly a murder-suicide or some other crime. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor ARCADIA - All eastbound lanes west of Baldwin Avenue on the 210 freeway in Acadia will be closed for at least eight hours after one person was found dead at the scene of a collision that was possibly tied to a freeway shooting, the California Highway Patrol said.
CHP responded to the scene at 9:05 a.m. September 4, according to Officer Peter Nicholson of the California Highway Patrol. Nicholson has preliminary information on a possible suspect vehicle involved but is waiting from a investigators on scene to develop better information before publicly sharing a description of the vehicle involved. All eastbound traffic is being diverted off at Michillinda Avenue. Nicholson was unaware of other injuries involved in the crash. Whether the victim died from the crash or from possibly being shot is not immediately known. |
