A sedan, possibly a Hyundai Sonata, crashed into the big rig on the eastbound I-10 freeway at the White Avenue offramp around 4:23 a.m. The sedan became trapped underneath the big rig’s trailer in the middle lanes, according to the California Highway Patrol.
All lanes except the No. 4 lane remain blocked, the CHP said. A caller reported a man and woman were inside the vehicle and the caller could hear screaming inside the sedan. A bleeding man exited the vehicle while a woman was unresponsive inside. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - A Montebello man is behind bars Sunday after leading Pomona officers on a high-speed pursuit during which he is accused of ramming patrol cars. Jairo Guerrero, 28, was booked on suspicion of felony evading and assault with a deadly weapon. He fled officers who tried to stop him after they responded to a call of a man armed with a knife. Police responded to the call at Indian Hill Boulevard and San Bernardino Avenue at 1:15 a.m. April 28. They observed the suspect leaving the area and attempted the traffic stop, Pomona Police said.
The suspect evaded officers on the westbound I-10 freeway, sometimes reaching speeds of 100 miles per hour. “During the pursuit, the suspect was using his vehicle as a weapon and ramming police cars. Three police cars were hit during the chase,” Pomona Police said. The pursuit transitioned to the southbound 57 freeway and at one point the suspect drove the car in reverse to escape police. The suspect continued hitting police cars until his vehicle became disabled after a front wheel broke off. The suspect fled on foot up an embankment at the I-10 and 57 freeway interchange. The suspect was located with a helicopter and was subdued with a stun gun. No officers or other drivers were injured. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - Officers working a gang suppression operation detained a man accused of public intoxication and later found a weapon on him, police said. Christian Chavez, a 26-year-old Pomona man, was arrested around 8:22 p.m. April 25 in the 1400 block of West Ninth Street. After detaining Chavez when they suspected him of public intoxication, they discovered a weapon in his possession, Pomona Police said. Officers confiscated a loaded, unregistered .38 special revolver concealed in a pocket.
Chavez was booked on suspicion of being a gang member carrying a loaded firearm, carrying an unregistered firearm and carrying a concealed firearm. The arrest was made by the Pomona Police Major Crimes Task Force, comprised of Pomona and CHP officers. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - Two illegal marijuana dispensaries were shut down in a four-day period at the same building, Pomona Police said. No arrests were made after multiple suspects fled the building in the 1300 block of South Garey Avenue April 24 just after 3 p.m. when officers searched the interior after finding an open door. More than 40 pounds of marijuana and related products were confiscated, Pomona Police said.
Officers initially responded April 24 after a caller reported seeing a man with handgun behind the building. Four days prior, officers took enforcement actions and seized contraband inside the same building, Pomona Police said. The building has been “red tagged” due to its dilapidated nature. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - A 28-year-old Pomona man is recovering Sunday after being shot by an unknown suspect. Officers responded to the shooting around 2:45 a.m. in the 700 block of East Alvarado Street April 21. The man was injured in his upper torso. He was hospitalized in stable condition, Pomona Police said. While the man was uncooperative with questioning, officers believe the shooting is gang related, Pomona Police said.
A dark-colored vehicle fled the area after the shooting. Anyone with information on a suspect is urged to call the Pomona Police Department at 909-620-2085. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - A home burglary suspect was barricaded for at least two hours April 13 after breaking into a home and attacking a resident. Cameron Magee, 29, surrendered to officers after a Pomona Police crisis negotiator convinced the man to give himself up after barricading himself inside the home in the 1200 block of Bayport Circle. Officers were called around 6:41 p.m., according to the Pomona Police Department. A disoriented Magee allegedly broke into the home and was confronted by a resident who fought with him. Magee then hit the resident over the head with a glass floor scale, Pomona Police said.
The resident fled to a neighbor’s home to call police. A perimeter was set up around the home and a helicopter was summoned after arriving officers could hear a suspect inside. The Pomona Police Crisis Negotiation Team responded. Negotiator Megan Gonzalez recognized Magee from previous encounters and established a rapport with him, eventually convincing him to surrender, Pomona Police said. Magee was taken into custody without further incident. Magee is accused of committing residential burglary and assault with a deadly weapon. The girl was contacted by Pomona officers from the department’s Major Crimes Task Force. She was interviewed and appropriate resources were activated to assist her, according to the Pomona Police Department.
The police work took place along the Holt Avenue corridor, an area known nationally as “The Blade.” Plainclothes officers conducted surveillance along to corridor as part of a zero tolerance approach to human trafficking and sexual exploitation, Pomona Police said. Officers are working to identify the girl’s pimp. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - An SUV erupted in flames after crashing into a power pole early Friday. The collision occurred on La Verne Avenue west of Garey Avenue at 2:42 a.m. The collision occurred near the La Verne Science and Tech Center charter school, 250 W. La Verne Ave. Classes were cancelled due to the collision. The school closure was done as a precautionary measure, according to school administrators. Pomona Police stated the school will not be opened until the investigation is complete and the roadway is opened. A 53-year-old woman was killed by the driver of a newer, dark-colored Dodge Charger at Holt Avenue and Caswell Street. The Charger should have significant damage to the front bumper and windshield, according to the Pomona Police Department. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - A pickup truck provided brief refuge from searching officers, but not from police K9 Tibo who located a hiding armed robbery suspect April 8. Joseph Sanabria, 39, was sought by police after being identified as the suspect in the armed robbery at a 76 gas station, 222 E. Holt Ave., Monday that occurred around 1:44 p.m. Officers investigating the robbery recognized the suspect in surveillance video as Sanabria based on previous contacts with him. An officer saw the Pomona man in the area a short time later and he ran, setting off a search, Pomona Police said.
Sanabria attempted to jump the walls of a car dealership. A perimeter search was immediately established and a helicopter was called to assist. An unmanned aerial vehicle was also used to help search, along with Pomona Police K9 Tibo who found Sanabria hiding under a pickup truck to the rear of a used car lot, Pomona Police said. Sanabria was booked on suspicion of armed robbery and several other charges. |
