Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA – Police announced the arrest of a Pomona man accused of pulling the trigger in a recent murder.
Gonzalo Avila, 40, was arrested March 26 by members of the Pomona Police Special Investigations Unit and Major Crimes Task Force. He was booked on suspicion of murder in the shooting of 29-year-old Anastasio Ezequiel Miranda from San Bernardino, according to the Pomona Police Department. Miranda was gunned down and left for dead in the south alley behind 420 E. Olive Ave. March 23. Officers were called to the scene around 1:15 p.m. Avila, identified as a local gang member, is also accused of trying to gun down two others. The two surviving victims were hospitalized. Avila was found in San Dimas with the assistance of the Fontana Police Department. An arrest warrant was written and Avila was taken into custody, the Pomona Police Department said. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office filed one count of murder, two counts of attempted murder and one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm against Avila. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA – A man was jailed Wednesday in a series on vandalisms committed at a Pomona residence. Through the investigation, detectives learned suspect Mel Fredric Brencius, 47, is suspected committing further vandalism and additional crimes in Hacienda Heights, Fullerton, Irvine, San Dimas and Idyllwild. In addition to vandalism, Brencius is accused of stalking and criminal threats, according to the Pomona Police Department. “The suspect was pouring paint on the victim’s houses, vehicles, and slashing their tires,” Pomona Police said.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office filed 18 counts against Brencius, which include felony vandalism, stalking and criminal threats. Brencius is being held in the Inmate Reception Center in Los Angeles in lieu of $550,000 ahead of a scheduled appearance in Pomona Superior Court September 8. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor SAN DIMAS - A stolen vehicle suspect remains at large after he ditched his stolen ride and fled Pomona Police on foot. The Jeep Cherokee was reported stolen February 12 out of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office. Pomona Police found it and attempted to stop the driver in the 1800 block of West Orange Grove Avenue, according to Lt. Bert Sanchez of the Pomona Police Department. The pursuit began around 9:30 p.m. February 16.
The pursuit found its way to the northbound 57 freeway where the driver exited onto Covina Boulevard in San Dimas. Pomona officers lost sight of the vehicle near the 210 freeway and Lone Hill Avenue. According to San Dimas Sheriff’s radio traffic, Pomona officers were able to track the suspect by triangulating a cell phone signal. Whose cell phone it was is not known. The Jeep Cherokee was found abandoned in the parking lot of the Bargain Store, 1499 W. Arrow Hwy. San Dimas deputies and the Glendora Police Department searched neighborhoods north of the shopping center, but the suspect was not located. |
