Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - As part of a comprehensive effort to address human trafficking in the City of Pomona, police will begin publishing mugshots of men arrested on suspicion of soliciting prostitution. The announcement was made by Police Chief Mike Ellis Monday, November 23. The mugshots are being published on the city website in a report that will be updated every 15 days in a effort to deter prostitution-related activity, Ellis said. At a November 16 Pomona city council meeting, a unanimous vote allowed for the ban on the hourly rental of hotels and motels in town. The ban takes effect December 16. In December, Police will add two more officers to the Sexual Exploitation and Human Trafficking Team to rescue victims of human trafficking and conduct direct enforcement on pimps and sex purchasers seven days per week, Pomona Police said. Pomona officers will also partner with the FBI’s Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Task Force. Federal criminal filing opportunities will also be granted to the department’s SET Team, Pomona Police said. Lastly, lighting will be upgraded along the Holt Avenue corridor to brighter LED lighting. “E. Holt Ave. and the illegal activity that occurs on our City streets remains a top priority for our Department,” Ellis said. “With these changes, we will continue to work with federal, state, and local partners to hold those who engage in sexual exploitation activity accountable and seek justice for victims.” Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - A woman was killed Thursday morning after rear-ending a parked vehicle, forcing it to strike a business.
Police and firefighters already found the driver dead after arriving to Holt Avenue and San Antonio Avenue. The driver could not be positively identified at the scene, according to the Pomona Police Department. The collision was dispatched to police just after 2 a.m. in the 700 block of East Holt Avenue. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA – Police have scheduled a DUI/Driver License checkpoint and patrols to begin Friday, November 20.
The checkpoint will run from 9 p.m. Friday, to 3 a.m. November 21. Patrols are scheduled to run from 7 p.m. Friday to 3 a.m. Saturday, according to the Pomona Police Department. “DUI checkpoints and saturation patrols are done in locations with a higher frequency of DUI-related collisions and arrests. During the checkpoint, officers will be looking for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment, with officers checking drivers for proper licensing,” according to the Pomona Police Department. In 2017, the Pomona Police Department investigated 127 DUI collisions which claimed one life and resulted in another 49 injuries, while statewide 1,120 people were killed in alcohol-involved crashes on California roads, Pomona Police said. Funding for these operations are provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - A Montclair man is facing a charge of attempted murder after allegedly stabbing another man during what police described as a dispute over an acquaintance. Montclair man Javier Perez, 33, is accused of stabbing a 26-year-old Ontario man just before 3 a.m. Halloween night inside a home in the 900 block of East 6th Street. The victim suffered multiple stab wounds to his torso. He received life-saving surgery and is recovering, according to the Pomona Police Department.
Detectives with the Pomona Police Major Crimes Unit took over the investigation, developed leads and identified Perez as a suspect November 4, Pomona Police said. Perez is known to the victim, Pomona Police said. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office filed the charge against Perez November 6. A red SUV struck the rear of the semi trailer and became stuck underneath it around 3:30 a.m. November 3. A Sig Alert was issued for the No. 3 and 4 lane for an unknown duration beginning just after 4 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. A tow truck was called to separate the SUV from the trailer, according to CHP traffic logs. Initial reports indicated as many as five people inside the SUV were trapped, according to CHP radio traffic. The Sig Alert appears to remain in effect as of 6:52 a.m. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - Police continue their investigation of a shooting that took the life of a 33-year-old man Saturday night. Officers responding to a gunshot victim call in the 500 block of East Phillips Boulevard October 31 found the unidentified victim suffering a single gunshot wound, according to the Pomona Police Department. Paramedics were unable to save the gunshot victim. He died at the scene, Pomona Police said.
The shooting occurred around 7 p.m. It is unclear if a suspect or motive has been identified. Anyone with information on the shooting is urged to call the Pomona Police Department at 909-620-2085.
