CityWatch Editor POMONA - Two big rigs collided, killing at least one person and triggering an Sig Alert Thursday. The transition road from the westbound I-10 freeway to the northbound 57 freeway is closed for at least two hours, according to the California Highway Patrol. A red big rig and white big rig collided around 8:42 a.m. in the trans road No. 2 lane. Early reports indicated a body was found under one of the big rigs. Both big rigs are fixed to 80,000-pound trailers and will require heavy-duty tow trucks, according to the CHP. Written by AARON CASTREJON
CityWatch Editor POMONA - One person has died and many others are injured in a major three-vehicle collision on the westbound 60 freeway in Pomona Saturday. The collision occurred in the HOV lane of the westbound 60 freeway just east of the 71 interchange. The crash and first responders are occupying the HOV and No. 1 and 2 lanes of traffic, according to California Highway Patrol traffic logs. The first report of a wrong way driver was received at 11 p.m. March 22. Multiple eyewitnesses reported seeing a vehicle traveling an opposing lanes. At least one person described the vehicle as a dark-colored sedan, while another described it as a white Honda Accord. The correct description of the vehicle is not immediately known. Firefighters arriving on scene described two vehicles while involved with fire. One person was trapped inside one of the vehicles, according to Los Angeles County Fire Department radio traffic. CityWatch Editor POMONA - The driver of a black Kia Sol reportedly fired a gun at another driver, causing some vehicle damage March 5. The shooting occurred in southbound lanes of the 57 freeway north of Temple Avenue around 4:09 p.m. The driver of a 2015 Toyota Tundra was driving southbound in the No. 3 lane and saw in his rear view mirror a black Kia Sol being driven erratically. When the driver of the Tundra changed lanes in front of the Kia’s driver, the latter became visibly agitated, according to the California Highway Patrol. The Kia’s driver drove up to the left side of the Tundra. “As the victim continued southbound … north of the Temple Avenue offramp, he heard a loud noise. Concerned, he exited the freeway at Sunset Crossing to inspect his vehicle and discovered a bullet hole near the rear tire on the driver’s side,” according to the CHP in a written statement. The Tundra’s driver returned to the area of the shooting and awaited the arrival of CHP officers. He could only describe the driver as a Latino male wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and black baseball cap. Drivers who were on the freeway at the time of the shooting are urged to review any camera video their vehicle may have. CityWatch Editor UPDATE: As of 8:19 a.m., all lanes have reopened, according to the California Highway Patrol. POMONA - All westbound lanes of the I-10 freeway just east of the 57 interchange remain blocked after a collision Monday. A FedEx truck reportedly hydroplaned and crashed into the center divider and a Chevrolet Blazer. The crash occurred around 4:16 a.m. March 3, according to the California Highway Patrol. All westbound traffic near the crash is being diverted to the 57 freeway. Remaining traffic is being diverted at the hard closure at Dudley Avenue, according to the CHP. CityWatch Editor POMONA - A Pomona man is facing a DUI charge, accused of driving in opposing lanes of the I-10 freeway Thursday. A CHP officer intercepted the alleged DUI driver near the 57 freeway and intentionally struck the suspect’s vehicle to prevent a major collision, according to the California Highway Patrol. CHP dispatchers began receiving calls of a wrong way driver on the eastbound I-10 near Milliken Avenue around 2:24 a.m. CHP Baldwin Park and Rancho Cucamonga units responded, according to the CHP. A traffic break was started east of the 57 freeway when the wrong way driver was spotted. “The officers used their patrol vehicle to intentionally collide with the wrong-way driver's vehicle, successfully causing it to spin out. The wrong-way vehicle then struck another civilian vehicle before coming to a complete stop,” according to the CHP in a written statement. The CHP officer’s unit also hit the center divider. Both the suspect and civilian driver were assessed, the latter received minor injuries. The officers also suffered minor injuries. Pomona man 22-year-old Javier Gudino was booked on suspicion of driving under the influence. He is being held in the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s San Dimas Station jail, according to Los Angeles County booking records. Written by AARON CASTREJON
CityWatch Editor POMONA - One person died after what was described as a gold Lexus SUV went up a hillside and rolled multiple times on the east I-10 freeway near Kellogg Drive. The No. 5 lane of the east I-10 freeway just east of Via Verde remains closed for up to two hours, according to the California Highway Patrol. The crash was reported around 5:30 a.m., July 3. As first responders were being dispatched, a caller reported to the CHP that a person was possibly trapped under the overturned SUV. Blood was reportedly coming out of the vehicle, according to CHP traffic logs. The HOV, No. 1 & 2 lanes have just reopened after being shut down for several hours during the investigation. First responders were called around 6:13 a.m. to two solo collisions. A white vehicle and dark sedan were involved. One of the vehicles blocked the No. 4 lane, while the other blocked the No. 1 & 2 lanes, according to the California Highway Patrol. By 6:36 a.m., the CHP requested all lanes be closed. By 9:02 a.m., the No. 3 & 4 lanes were opened and the coroner arrived on scene. It is not yet publicly clear what caused the fatal crash. Fernando Lopez, 31, was taken into custody in Corona May 23 after ditching his reportedly stolen ride. Officers attempted to stop him near White Avenue and Holt Avenue, according to the Pomona Police Department. The incident began at 11:15 a.m. Lopez allegedly fled police at high speed, ignored stop signs and drove in opposing lanes of traffic. The pursuit took to the southbound 71 freeway into Corona, according to the Pomona Police Department. Lopez escaped his vehicle on Serfas Club Drive. An Ontario Police helicopter located Lopez in a tree. Lopez was booked on suspicion of felony evading, grand theft auto, possession of burglary tools, possession of a controlled substance and driving on a suspended license, according to the Pomona Police Department. POMONA - Possibly as many as 30 to 50 vehicles were disabled after a large pothole developed on the northbound 71 freeway near Holt Avenue Tuesday. A full freeway closure of the 71 at Holt Avenue is in place for an unknown duration. The California Highway Patrol is attempting to get an updated status from Caltrans who has been requested for emergency repair work, but materials needed for the emergency repair work are apparently not available until the day shift crew arrives, according to the California Highway Patrol. The CHP first received calls from drivers around 4:11 a.m. Wednesday, March 15.
