Jordan Malik Menefee, 19, was captured by members of the Pomona Police Special Investigations Unit Monday after witnessing him leave an apartment unit in the 4100 block of West Thornton Avenue in Hemet. Menefee is accused of committing two shootings and an armed robbery in October and November of 2019, Pomona Police said. Menefee eluded law enforcement by hopping from acquaintance to acquaintance throughout SoCal until detectives got a break on his whereabouts in April, Pomona Police said.
“A search warrant was served immediately following Menefee’s arrest and a loaded firearm was located within Menefee’s vehicle,” Pomona Police said in a written statement. Menefee was booked on suspicion of attempted murder, assault with a firearm, shooting at an inhabited dwelling/occupied vehicle and armed robbery. Menefee is being held in lieu of nearly $7.4 million bail at the Men’s Central Jail in Los Angeles. The fire burned at 151 N. Reservoir St., just before 11:30 p.m. April 29. Within 10 minutes of arriving, incident commanders asked for a second-alarm response, doubling the number of firefighters on scene, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. 60 firefighters were on hand to knock down the blaze. The shooting occurred in the area of East Mission Boulevard between South San Antonio Avenue and South Reservoir Street around 1:30 a.m. Police responded to the scene and a short time later, the unidentified victim wound up at a hospital, according to the Pomona Police Department. Police announced just after 3:30 a.m. that both directions of Mission Boulevard from San Antonio to Reservoir would be closed. They have yet to announce when Mission would reopen. Aly Mejia, spokeswoman for the Pomona Police Department, confirmed the mother and stepfather of the two teen girls died Sunday, April 19. Mejia said the department would not release anymore information out of respect for the family. A person at the hospital, who wished to not be publicly identified, received word of the double suicide around 11:30 a.m. the day Jose Cervantes-Hernandez, 47, and Rosana Leyva took their lives by jumping off a hospital parking structure. The mother and stepfather landed in the trauma bay of Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center, the source told SGV CityWatch. In a gofundme post, family and friends identified the mother and 13-year-old Rosemery Gallo Leyva. The stepfather was first publicly identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. Rosemery was declared brain dead over the weekend. Family made the decision to take her off life support. Thay Hung Leyva, 17, died at the scene of the apartment fire in the 1100 block of East Franklin Avenue April 16. Thay and Rosemery were prevented from exiting their downstairs apartment at the front by flames, while furniture and a window-mounted air conditioner prevented escape from the rear. Thay died from thermal burns and inhalation of products of combustion, the coroner said. The girls’ grandmother was also inside, but was able to escape with minor injuries. The fire’s cause is under investigation. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - A convicted felon was jailed Saturday after a traffic investigation led to the discovery of weed and weapons April 18. 38-year-old Mario Galvez, was stopped after officers witnessed him driving in opposing lanes in the 1100 block of West Second Street just after 7 p.m. After discovering Galvez has a suspended driver license, police searched his vehicle. “Officers found marijuana that was packaged for drug sales and a pair of brass knuckles that were concealed in the center console of Suspect Galvez’ car,” Pomona Police said in a written statement.
Officers searched Galvez’s home after obtaining a search warrant and located a rifle, handgun, large amounts of ammunition and more marijuana in amounts consistent with drug sales, Pomona Police said. Galvez was booked on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm, being a felon in possession of ammunition, possession of marijuana for sales and possession of brass knuckles. The collision occurred in the area of Towne Avenue and Lincoln Avenue around 3:15 a.m. The officer was on-duty when the crash happened, according to the Pomona Police Department. “During the course of the investigation, it was determined that the motorcyclist was under the influence of alcohol and was driving while impaired at the time of the collision,” Pomona Police said in a written statement.
The rider was arrested. His booking information was not provided. The collision is being investigated by the Pomona Police Department's Major Accident Investigation Team. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - A Hemet man was arrested early Easter Sunday after Pomona Police identified him as a suspect in a fatal shooting of a man from Saturday night. 31-year-old Raymond Leonard Rice was located at a home in Hemet and was taken into custody by the Pomona Police Department SWAT Team after they serve a search warrant, according to the Pomona Police Department in a written statement. Officers were dispatched at 5:13 p.m. to the 2000 block of Las Vegas Avenue for a reported shooting. Soon after, officers learned a family member drove the victim to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center, Pomona Police said.
The shooting victim succumbed to his injuries. Rice was arrested at 4:50 a.m. He was booked at 6 a.m. in the Pomona city jail and is being held in lieu of $2 million bail, according to Los Angeles County booking records. Rice has a scheduled appearance in Pomona Superior Court April 14. The crash was reported around 11:25 p.m. April 11. Additional closures include the northbound and southbound 57 freeway and 71 freeway trans roads to the westbound I-10 freeway, according to the California Highway Patrol. Firefighters were dispatched to North Orange Grove Avenue and East Artesia Street at 8:46 a.m. April 7. Firefighters were told that the man possibly jumped from the parking structure. The victim was declared dead on arrival, according to Dispatch Supervisor Miguel Ornelas of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Hospital security called officers to the scene, according to Lt. Eddie Vasquez of the Pomona Police Department. Vasquez Could not elaborate further and said that the investigation was handed over to the coroner. The man was identified as 35-year-old Joshua Lane Barendrecht, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. His city of residence was not immediately available. An autopsy has yet to be scheduled. More than 1,100 pounds of marijuana was confiscated from the building At 960 E. First St. The marijuana operation was discovered just after 4 a.m. April 2. While investigating damage to the commercial building’s door, an officer found the building’s owner standing to the front of the location, Pomona police said. The Pomona police special investigations unit arrived on scene, authored a search warrant, and later confiscated the marijuana. “Although the use of marijuana is legal in the State of California, the cultivation and sales of Marijuana are illegal within city limits,” Pomona police said in a written statement. Police arrested 42-year-old Claremont resident Matthew Alan. He was booked on suspicion of cultivation of marijuana, Pomona police said. City of Pomona code enforcement “red-tagged” the building to rent rent unsafe and uninhabitable, Pomona police said. |
