Written by AARON CASTREJON | CityWatch Editor POMONA - A La Puente man was taken into custody Thursday night after leading Pomona Police and CHP officers on a reckless pursuit.
Edward Bustillos, 43, was arrested after deciding to surrender to California Highway Patrol officers in the 500 block of South Vincent Avenue June 21 outside a Pizza Hut restaurant. A second passenger, a woman, was detained by the CHP, but no arrest information is available for her. Bustillos is a parolee on a firearm violation, Pomona Police said. Pomona officers with the department’s Major Crimes Task Force attempted to stop the driver of a 1998 green Lexus in the 2300 block of North San Antonio Avenue around 7:43 p.m. after the driver reportedly committed a series of vehicle code violations, the Pomona Police Department said. The driver, Bustillos, refused to stop and led officers on a pursuit along Pomona surface streets and west on the Interstate 10 freeway into West Covina where the chase continued after exiting the freeway. Bustillos was booked on suspicion of felony reckless evading and on a parole violation. He is being held without bail in the Inmate Reception Center in Los Angeles ahead of a scheduled June 25 appearance at Pomona Superior Court. Written by AARON CASTREJON | CityWatch Editor POMONA - A strange slow-speed chase wound its way through Pomona May 1, ultimately ending with the PIT maneuver and a suspect in custody.
Anton Laron Mitchell, 48, was arrested after refusing to stop for Pomona officers. It was unclear, due to Mitchell’s apparent intoxicated nature, if he was being held against his will after calling an acquaintance, Pomona Police said. The acquaintance called Pomona Police around 1:20 p.m. Mitchell stated “he was going to give up” and “they were going to kill him,” leading the acquaintance to believe Mitchell was driving around town, being held against his will, Pomona Police said. Officers intercepted Mitchell’s blue 2001 Saturn on Orange Grove and La Verne Street. The vehicle did not yield during a traffic stop and officers pursed the vehicle around town at slow speed. Officers could not tell if Mitchell was really being held against his will, due to the tinted windows of his Saturn and the inconsistent nature of Mitchell’s statements, Pomona Police said. Mitchell then stated he wanted to see his probation officer. The Pomona probation office was temporarily placed on lockdown, Pomona Police said. The pursuit continued onto Mission Boulevard, past the Pomona Police Department, driving behind a business on 2nd Street where it continued westbound. After 20 minutes, a Pomona Police supervisor performed the Pursuit Intervention Technique (PIT maneuver) and disabled the Saturn in the 1600 block of West 2nd Street. Mitchell was arrested and booked on suspicion of felony evading police, driving under the influence and was placed on a Post-Release Community Supervision (AB109) probation hold.
