CityWatch Editor POMONA - Three different agencies continue their investigation into a police shooting that wounded a man seen brandishing a replica firearm as he fled from officers June 27. The shooting of 38-year-old Ruben Martinez took place near the 500 block of East Holt Avenue. Officers patrolling the area to address quality of life concerns observed a man on a bicycle riding erratically and causing traffic hazards on the road. Officers attempted to stop the bicyclist but he ran, according to the Pomona Police Department. The suspect, while fleeing, pulled out what was later determined to be a replica handgun and brandished it in both hands. The suspect allegedly refused to drop the weapon, according to the Pomona Police Department. The suspect was shot after he reportedly turned towards officers while he was brandishing the replica firearm. Police worn body cam shows that the suspect dropped to the ground after being shot. Officers rushed to provide aid to him as he bled on the sidewalk until paramedics could arrive to take over care. The suspect is expected to survive his wounds, according to the Pomona Police Department. Pomona detectives are investigating this police shooting. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is independently investigating this incident and will turn over the findings to the Los Angeles County district Attorney’s Office for appropriate action. CityWatch Editor POMONA - A suspect escaped custody briefly July 21 while being checked in at Pomona Superior Court and scaled a portion of the building to evade capture. The man was a burglary suspect who was arrested by La Verne Police recently, and was being taken in for a court appearance. The suspect escaped while he was being uncuffed and slid through a chain link fence to climb the building, according to deputy Raquel Utley of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. The incident began around 11:25 a.m. Monday. The suspect climbed to what was described as a bus bay at the courthouse, 400 Civic Center Plaza, Utley told SGV CityWatch. He scaled other portions of the building, according to social media cell phone clips. La Verne Police officers were assisted by Pomona Police officers with setting a perimeter while deputies with the sheriff’s court services bureau and Los Angeles County firefighters worked to bring the suspect down safely. The Sheriff’s Mental Evaluation Team convinced the suspect to climb down after being offered a soda and was placed back into custody, Utley told SGV CityWatch. The suspect was reportedly armed with a replica firearm, according to the Pomona Police Department. The shooting took place in the 500 block of East Holt Avenue around 6:10 p.m. June 27. The circumstances leading up to the shooting are not quite clear yet. Investigators from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office will be handling the investigation. CityWatch Editor POMONA - Los Angeles County Sheriff’s detectives are investigating after Pomona officers opened fire on a man, killing him Tuesday. The shooting took place around Midnight at the intersection of North Hamilton Boulevard and West Center Street June 25. The suspect was treated at the scene and taken to a hospital where he later died, according to the Sheriff’s Department. Video from the scene showed a vehicle riddled with bullets parked on a street. The Sheriff’s Information Bureau said detectives are trying to determine what led up to the police shooting. No officers were injured. CityWatch Editor POMONA - A domestic disturbance suspect is recovering after being shot by Pomona police at the end of a barricade at a collision scene Sunday night. The suspect allegedly fired off a handgun during the domestic disturbance in the 200 block of Las Brisas Circle, June 9. He fled the scene in a vehicle at a high rate of speed and crashed in the intersection of Holt Avenue and White Avenue, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. The suspect allegedly refused to exit his vehicle and barricaded himself. During this time, police shot the suspect. The suspect is currently recovering from his wounds at a hospital and is listed in stable condition, according to the Sheriff’s Information Bureau. CityWatch Editor POMONA - A man accused of firing off a handgun at a mobile home park Wednesday night was shot and wounded by Pomona officers after allegedly firing at them. Officers responded to a report of a man firing a weapon at the Westland Estates Mobile Home Park, 1401 W. Ninth St., around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 5. Officers encountered an armed suspect on the street and reportedly made multiple commands for him to drop the weapon. He allegedly did not comply. The suspect reportedly fired at officers who then shot and wounded him. He was transported to a hospital where he is being treated for his injuries, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. A weapon was reportedly recovered at the scene. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau is investigating the shooting. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA – Bomb squad technicians safely secured and rendered safe an explosive device found on a patient who was taken to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center Monday night for treatment.
Security at the hospital, 1798 N. Garey Ave., called the Pomona Police Department. A PVC pipe with endcaps and a fuse was located and an explosives detection K9 at the hospital alerted to the device, according to the Pomona Police Department. The patient arrived by ambulance form West Covina. “Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center was not evacuated but as a precaution the main entrance to the emergency room was shut down and ambulances were rerouted to other local hospitals for approximately one hour,” according to the Pomona Police Department in a written statement. Orange Grove Avenue was also shut down between Artesia Street and Tate Avenue. Pomona investigators do not believe the hospital was the target and that the patient was merely in possession of the device. Investigators are working with an “allied agency” to determine the patient’s identity and where they reside. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA – Sheriff’s homicide investigators revealed that a gunman reportedly opened fire unprovoked on a Pomona officer who attempted to speak with him and several others Thursday night.
The shooting occurred in the 300 block of Orchid Lane around 7:15 p.m. February 3. The officer was struck by gunfire in one leg and was able to return fire, striking the suspect twice, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau. The wounded gunman and two others that were congregating with him fled. A containment search helped find a suspect with two gunshot wounds to the upper torso. Both the officer and suspect were hospitalized. The suspect, only described as a Hispanic man in his 30s, was also treated. The fate of the two others seen with the suspect is not publicly known. Jan Kumar Agarwala, a 54-year-old Pomona man, was investigated after officers were called to a domestic violence report in the 1600 block of Lawrence Place Sunday around 6:37 p.m. Agarwala is accused of pushing the mother of his children and throwing a drink at her, Pomona Police said. Since Agarwala was accused of domestic violence, police inquired of any weapons in the home. The law allows for the temporary removal of firearms in such cases, Pomona Police said. Police were informed of multiple weapons, including rifles, shotguns and handguns in the home. One weapon was discovered stolen, Pomona Police said. The weapons were seized. “Additionally, officers located 7 military smoke grenades, 2 suspected smoke grenades, 2 illumination flares, 2 pounds of a white powder substance, a roll of hobby fuse, an electric detonator, 2 containers of Hexamine tablets, and one pound of smokeless powder,” Pomona Police said in a written statement. Agarwala was booked at the Pomona jail. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office filed charges of possession of explosive, possession of ingredients to make a destructive device, receiving stolen property, criminal storage of a firearm and domestic battery. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - A one-to-two-acre brush fire is burning in the Pomona hills. The fire is preliminarily sized at 100 feet by 100 feet, creeping slowly uphill near the 100 block of Diamond Ranch Road, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. A full brush fire response has been ordered, including helicopters and hand crews. The fire has the potential to spread to as many as three acres, firefighters said.
