Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA – The suspect accused of fighting with another man, causing severe head trauma that led to the victim’s death was tracked down and arrested February 26. Pomona man Quintial Brown, 26, was arrested in the 3100 block of West Temple Avenue. He was booked on suspicion of murder, robbery, criminal threats and witness intimidation. Brown allegedly fought with his victim, 60-year-old Jorge Luis Lopez, December 29, 2019 in the 600 block of East Holt Avenue. Brown was released due to insufficient evidence at the time and potential self defense issues, Pomona Police said.
The victim was hospitalized with severe head trauma and died January 13, Pomona Police said. Investigators discovered new evidence in the circumstances prior to the fight and the case against Brown was resubmitted with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, which issued an arrest warrant, Pomona Police said. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - Pomona and California Highway Patrol officers working an undercover gang operation nabbed a gang banger on a bicycle and discovered he was carrying a gun, ammunition and drugs. Fernando Padron, a 23-year-old Pomona man, was caught after the Pomona Police Major Crimes Task Force attempted to stop the fleeing suspect in the 800 block of West Holt Avenue, Pomona Police said. Officers recognized Padron who has numerous run-ins with Pomona Police. He is also on active probation. After being detained while briefly evading officers on his bicycle, Padron told them he was armed with a loaded handgun.
Padron was arrested a few weeks ago for possession of a loaded firearm. He bailed out and is awaiting his trial. Last week, he was arrested again by the Major Crimes Task Force during the execution of a search warrant. He was arrested for possession of a controlled substance for sales. He also bailed out on this open charge pending his trail, Pomona Police said. Padron was booked on suspicion of being a gang member in possession of a loaded firearm, carrying an unregistered firearm, carrying a concealed firearm, possession of a controlled substance while armed, being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm, being a prohibited person in possession of ammunition, and possession of a controlled substance. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA – Police arrested two drivers February 21, accusing them of driving under the influence. The arrests were made during a DUI and driver license checkpoint at Garey Avenue and Lexington Avenue. Officers also cited/arrested 23 drivers for driving unlicensed or for driving on a suspended or revoked license, Pomona Police said in a written statement. Officers towed four vehicles as well. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA – A man prohibited from owning firearms was arrested after officers discovered an unregistered semi-automatic rifle in his vehicle February 24. Edgar Duran, a 31-year-old Pomona man, was stopped by officers conducting a gang and violent crime saturation detail in the 2000 block of South Garvey Avenue just before Noon after officers witnessed him driving erratically. Duran stopped and officers searched his vehicle, which did not sport any plates, Pomona Police said. In addition to the semi-automatic, short-barrel rifle, high-capacity magazines and a large amount of ammunition were discovered, Pomona police said.
Duran was booked on suspicion of possessing an unregistered firearm, possessing a short-barrel rifle and for being a felon in possession of a firearm. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - A Chino man was taken into custody Tuesday night, accused by police of recklessly evading officers and crashing into vehicles during a drunken pursuit with his 1-year-old child in the van. Anthony Michael Trejo, 29, is accused of felony DUI, Felony child endangerment, felony injury hit and run, felony pursuit, misdemeanor violation of a restraining order and misdemeanor driving on a suspended license, according to the Pomona Police Department. The child’s worried mother called Pomona Police at 8 p.m. February 18 to report Trejo’s alleged drunk driving with their child in a Honda minivan, Pomona Police said. After responding to the south end of Pomona to search for Trejo, he was found driving near Reservoir Street and County Road. Trejo allegedly refused to stop and a slow speed pursuit begin.
After pulling over for officers for a short time, Trejo fled the scene at an increased speed while ignoring red lights, Pomona Police said. After officers canceled the pursuit due to Trejo’s dangerous driving, he caused four collisions: three of them minor and one causing a minor injury, Pomona Police said. Officers located Trejo in the 700 block of Washington shortly after terminating the pursuit. He was caught after a brief foot chase. The 1-year-old child was immediately found uninjured in the minivan. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA – A crash ejected one person and trapped two others inside a mangled vehicle Tuesday morning. The collision occurred in the 2000 block of North Garey Avenue just before 2 a.m. The preliminary investigation leads officers to believe the vehicle crashed at high speed into a concrete divider before rolling into a tree, Pomona Police said.
The two trapped people were extricated from the vehicle by Los Angeles County Firefighters. Two of the three victims are in critical condition, Pomona Police said. It is unclear if alcohol or drugs played a factor in the crash. The Pomona Police Major Accident Investigation Team is on scene. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - A student was found unresponsive and was later declared dead last week in a dorm room at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. Noah Kendrix, 24, was identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. His cause of death has been deferred pending additional investigation. Los Angeles County Firefighters were dispatched to University Village, 3400 Poly Vista, at 9:54 a.m. February 6. The patient was found possibly already deceased, according to Inspector Henry Narvaez of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. There is no information yet stating how long Kendrix was in the room before he was found. Kendrix was a visual communication design major in the university’s Art Department at the College of Environmental Design. In a social media post, the Art Department briefly eulogized the art student: “This week we say goodbye to Noah Kendrix, a Visual Communication Design Major. You will be missed. Our thoughts go out to Noah’s family.”
Benardo Dargan, associate vice president and dean of students sent the following message to SGV CityWatch: “It is distressing when a member of our community dies, and we are offering support to those who knew him. We ask that people respect the family’s privacy as they travel this terrible grief journey. While the cause of death is a matter for the coroner, we can assure the community that the campus remains safe.” SGV CityWatch obtained an email sent to University Village residents the day of Kendrix’s death. The message was sent to Village residents who may have been curious or greatly concerned about the presence of emergency personnel and vehicles. “We want to assure you that there are no safety concerns for the campus and University Village related to this isolated incident,” according to the email. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - The sound of gunfire led to two suspects attempting to flee a Pomona neighborhood Sunday, police said. Officers with the Pomona Police Major Crimes Task Force were patrolling near Hamilton Boulevard and Monterey Avenue when they heard gunfire. 9-1-1 calls near the 1200 block of West First Street helped officers track down a small black car seen by residents, according to the Pomona Police Department. The vehicle fled west from the neighborhood. Officers found the occupied vehicle parked outside a known gang house in the 1200 block of West Second Street, Pomona Police said. “As Officers approached the vehicle they noticed a single shell casing on the ground just outside the passenger front door,” Pomona Police said in a written statement.
Additional shell casings were found inside the car. Christian Aldrete and Angel Bocanegra, both 18, were arrested. Among the charges they were booked on suspicion of include carrying a loaded firearm, negligent discharge of a firearm, carrying a concealed firearm in a vehicle and removal of a firearm serial number, Pomona Police said. Both men admitted to firing the handgun, Pomona Police said. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - A dispensary that was a frequent problem was shut down Monday morning, Pomona Police said. The dispensary at 1635 N. Garvey Ave., was shut down by the Pomona Police Special Investigations Unit with the assistance of the Department of Consumer Affairs - Cannabis Enforcement Unit. The dispensary was operating without a permit and was the focus of numerous complaints, Pomona Police said. “This location refused to comply with the city’s request to cease the illegal activity,” Pomona Police said in a written statement. More than 22 pounds of marijuana and more than 235 pounds of marijuana product were seized, along with heroin and cocaine, Pomona Police said.
“Although the use of marijuana is legal in the State of California, the sales of Marijuana are illegal within city limits,” Pomona Police said. “These investigations are sensitive and all efforts to stop the activities are exhausted before Police action is taken.” The location was deemed uninhabitable and was "red tagged." Police have not identified any suspects and it is unclear if suspects have been arrested. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - A possible fight led to gunfire in Downtown Pomona Saturday night, police said. Two men from Fontana were arrested with the help of witnesses who saw the gunfire unfold near 3rd Street and Garey Avenue February 8 around 1:45 a.m. Both suspects were found as they ran to a vehicle and one of the suspects tried to escape on foot, Pomona Police said. After a brief foot chase, the escaping suspect was detained. The second suspect, described as the driver, was also detained.
No one was reported injured. Brian Alan Beltran, 33, and Armando Ochoa, 32, were both arrested. Charges include possession of a stolen firearm, negligent discharge of a firearm, public drunkenness and bringing narcotics into a jail. |
