Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - Police arrested a man Thursday morning after he led them on a pursuit, during which he allegedly tried to dump methamphetamine out his vehicle. Police arrested Jose Luis Cabrera, a 28-year-old known gang member, in the driveway of his home after he fled from officers. Police witnessed Cabrera driving at high speed at White Avenue and Monterey Avenue around 12:17 a.m. March 19, according to the Pomona Police Department. Cabrera refused to stop when officers tried to pull him over and he drove recklessly around the city. Once Cabrera stopped, he struggled with officers who detained him, Pomona Police said.
“It was learned that during the pursuit, Suspect Cabrera made desperate attempts to discard a large quantity of methamphetamine,” Pomona Police said in a written statement. “Traces of the drug residue was found spread about the inside of his car. Despite his actions, several grams of methamphetamine were recovered.” A search warrant was served at Cabrera’s home where three firearms, several rounds of ammunition, body armor and a high capacity gun magazine, methamphetamine, marijuana, packaging material and nearly $3,300, Pomona Police said. Cabrera was booked on suspicion of felony evading, possession of a controlled substance for sales and for violating his probation. Additional charges will be filed against the suspect or suspects responsible for the items found during the search, Pomona Police said. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - A Norco man was arrested Friday after recklessly evading police throughout Pomona and keeping them at bay during a brief standoff. Raul Salas, 37, rammed a police car as officers exited their vehicle near Holt Avenue and Currier Street around 12:38 a.m. March 6. Salas then hit a parked vehicle and led officers on a pursuit, Pomona Police said.
Salas allegedly made several more attempts to flee by ramming another police car after he drove through a car wash and stopped at a dead end, Pomona Police said. Salas was eventually taken into custody and booked on suspicion of assaulting a peace officer, felony evading and driving under the influence. He also had an outstanding burglary warrant, Pomona Police said. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - A Chino man was taken into custody Tuesday night, accused by police of recklessly evading officers and crashing into vehicles during a drunken pursuit with his 1-year-old child in the van. Anthony Michael Trejo, 29, is accused of felony DUI, Felony child endangerment, felony injury hit and run, felony pursuit, misdemeanor violation of a restraining order and misdemeanor driving on a suspended license, according to the Pomona Police Department. The child’s worried mother called Pomona Police at 8 p.m. February 18 to report Trejo’s alleged drunk driving with their child in a Honda minivan, Pomona Police said. After responding to the south end of Pomona to search for Trejo, he was found driving near Reservoir Street and County Road. Trejo allegedly refused to stop and a slow speed pursuit begin.
After pulling over for officers for a short time, Trejo fled the scene at an increased speed while ignoring red lights, Pomona Police said. After officers canceled the pursuit due to Trejo’s dangerous driving, he caused four collisions: three of them minor and one causing a minor injury, Pomona Police said. Officers located Trejo in the 700 block of Washington shortly after terminating the pursuit. He was caught after a brief foot chase. The 1-year-old child was immediately found uninjured in the minivan. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - A loaded firearm was recovered and two people were jailed Friday after the driver fled a traffic stop early Friday. Valarie Sauers, 30, and Sonya Sifuentes, 35, were taken into custody by Pomona Police officers and California Highway Patrol officers working a gang suppression operation with the Pomona Police Major Crimes Task Force. Officers conducted a traffic stop on the driver, Sauers, in the 1400 block of South Garvey Avenue. Sauers stopped her vehicle at Franklin Avenue and Garvey, but drove away from approaching officers, according to the Pomona Police Department. A slow-speed pursuit ensued to Bolivar Street and Mayfair Avenue where Sifuentes, who was riding shotgun, escaped on foot. Sauers continued to drive from officers, the Pomona Police Department said. Officers ran after Sifuentes and took her into custody.
Sauers drove a short distance before stopping for officers who took her into custody. A vehicle search revealed a loaded handgun, the Pomona Police Department said. Sauers and Sifuentes were both booked on suspicion of carrying a loaded firearm, being a felon in possession of a firearm and felony evading. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - A drug trafficker was sentenced to 19 years in federal prison August 5 for crimes committed during a 2015 pursuit. Jose Guadalupe Fermin led Pomona officers on a short chase, but was taken into custody without incident in a residential area November of 2015. A loaded, stolen handgun and methamphetamine were located inside Fermin’s vehicle, Pomona Police said. Two pounds of meth was also discovered after being tossed by Fermin during the pursuit. “Based on the seriousness of the crimes and Fermin’s criminal history, Fermin was indicted by the federal grand jury,” Pomona Police said. Fermin pleaded guilty to possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute and possession of a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking, Pomona Police said.
Fermin was investigated by the FBI Safe Streets Task Force: a multi-agency team comprised of members of the FBI, DEA, Pomona Police Department, El Monte Police Department, L.A. County Sheriff’s Department and the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. The task force is committed to investigating and prosecuting violent gang members and high-level drug traffickers in the San Gabriel Valley. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - A Montebello man is behind bars Sunday after leading Pomona officers on a high-speed pursuit during which he is accused of ramming patrol cars. Jairo Guerrero, 28, was booked on suspicion of felony evading and assault with a deadly weapon. He fled officers who tried to stop him after they responded to a call of a man armed with a knife. Police responded to the call at Indian Hill Boulevard and San Bernardino Avenue at 1:15 a.m. April 28. They observed the suspect leaving the area and attempted the traffic stop, Pomona Police said.
The suspect evaded officers on the westbound I-10 freeway, sometimes reaching speeds of 100 miles per hour. “During the pursuit, the suspect was using his vehicle as a weapon and ramming police cars. Three police cars were hit during the chase,” Pomona Police said. The pursuit transitioned to the southbound 57 freeway and at one point the suspect drove the car in reverse to escape police. The suspect continued hitting police cars until his vehicle became disabled after a front wheel broke off. The suspect fled on foot up an embankment at the I-10 and 57 freeway interchange. The suspect was located with a helicopter and was subdued with a stun gun. No officers or other drivers were injured. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor SAN DIMAS - A stolen vehicle suspect remains at large after he ditched his stolen ride and fled Pomona Police on foot. The Jeep Cherokee was reported stolen February 12 out of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office. Pomona Police found it and attempted to stop the driver in the 1800 block of West Orange Grove Avenue, according to Lt. Bert Sanchez of the Pomona Police Department. The pursuit began around 9:30 p.m. February 16.
The pursuit found its way to the northbound 57 freeway where the driver exited onto Covina Boulevard in San Dimas. Pomona officers lost sight of the vehicle near the 210 freeway and Lone Hill Avenue. According to San Dimas Sheriff’s radio traffic, Pomona officers were able to track the suspect by triangulating a cell phone signal. Whose cell phone it was is not known. The Jeep Cherokee was found abandoned in the parking lot of the Bargain Store, 1499 W. Arrow Hwy. San Dimas deputies and the Glendora Police Department searched neighborhoods north of the shopping center, but the suspect was not located. Police discovered the stolen vehicle and tried to stop the driver at North Towne Avenue and Holt Avenue around 1:17 a.m. The driver fled officers onto the eastbound I-10 freeway from Towne, according to Lt. Marcus Perez of the Pomona Police Department. Officers lost sight of the blacked out car on the eastbound I-10 freeway at Monte Vista and terminated the pursuit, Perez said. Anton Laron Mitchell, 48, was arrested after refusing to stop for Pomona officers. It was unclear, due to Mitchell’s apparent intoxicated nature, if he was being held against his will after calling an acquaintance, Pomona Police said. The acquaintance called Pomona Police around 1:20 p.m. Mitchell stated “he was going to give up” and “they were going to kill him,” leading the acquaintance to believe Mitchell was driving around town, being held against his will, Pomona Police said. Officers intercepted Mitchell’s blue 2001 Saturn on Orange Grove and La Verne Street. The vehicle did not yield during a traffic stop and officers pursed the vehicle around town at slow speed. Officers could not tell if Mitchell was really being held against his will, due to the tinted windows of his Saturn and the inconsistent nature of Mitchell’s statements, Pomona Police said. Mitchell then stated he wanted to see his probation officer. The Pomona probation office was temporarily placed on lockdown, Pomona Police said. The pursuit continued onto Mission Boulevard, past the Pomona Police Department, driving behind a business on 2nd Street where it continued westbound. After 20 minutes, a Pomona Police supervisor performed the Pursuit Intervention Technique (PIT maneuver) and disabled the Saturn in the 1600 block of West 2nd Street. Mitchell was arrested and booked on suspicion of felony evading police, driving under the influence and was placed on a Post-Release Community Supervision (AB109) probation hold. The suspect has stopped in traffic lanes and refuses to exit the vehicle. He apparently has placed his driver license and a piece of paper on the passenger-side window, according to California Highway Patrol radio traffic. The CHP is diverting traffic in the area. |
