The suspect, who remains unnamed, was identified as a Pomona resident through the work of the police department’s Special Investigations Unit. He is accused in a series of robberies from July 29 to September 8. The suspect targeted cell phone stores, gas stations with mini marts and also targeted insurance offices — all within a close geographical area, Pomona Police said.
One of the suspect’s Crimes was caught on surveillance camera August 31 when he fought with a female employee at an insurance office and ultimately stole cash. “We would like to thank the community and the media for their assistance with this incident. We are grateful for our continued partnership to make this community safe for all our residents and visitors,” Pomona Police said in a written statement. The suspect was recorded as he violently attacked an employee at ALE Insurance, 1285 S. Garey Ave., August 31. The suspect pretended to be a customer, left the business and returned with a knife he brandished from his waistband. The suspect and employee fought each other; the latter grabbed for the knife as the suspect kept the employee at bay by holding her long hair. The employee was slammed against a bookshelf and held against the floor.
The suspect eventually stole roughly $1,000 from the employee’s desk. The armed suspect is wanted in connection for three gas station robberies where money from the cash register was demanded while brandishing a weapon, Pomona Police said. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - Two men burst into an illegal marijuana dispensary July 14 and took an undisclosed amount of product and money, police said. The robbery occurred in the 300 block of North Park Avenue around 7:21 p.m. Both suspects were masked and armed. One of them fired one round in the business during the robbery, Pomona Police said. Both suspects fled on foot.
No one was injured. While a robbery investigation is underway, a separate criminal investigation was started for the illegal dispensary, which was shut down just one week prior, Pomona Police said. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - A pickup truck provided brief refuge from searching officers, but not from police K9 Tibo who located a hiding armed robbery suspect April 8. Joseph Sanabria, 39, was sought by police after being identified as the suspect in the armed robbery at a 76 gas station, 222 E. Holt Ave., Monday that occurred around 1:44 p.m. Officers investigating the robbery recognized the suspect in surveillance video as Sanabria based on previous contacts with him. An officer saw the Pomona man in the area a short time later and he ran, setting off a search, Pomona Police said.
Sanabria attempted to jump the walls of a car dealership. A perimeter search was immediately established and a helicopter was called to assist. An unmanned aerial vehicle was also used to help search, along with Pomona Police K9 Tibo who found Sanabria hiding under a pickup truck to the rear of a used car lot, Pomona Police said. Sanabria was booked on suspicion of armed robbery and several other charges. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - Two men and a woman were jailed March 3, accused of carjacking a man who went out on a date with a female suspect and trying to sell the victim's stolen subwoofer. The victim, a Pomona man, agreed to meet with suspect Alaiza Gamez, an 18-year-old Whittier woman, after speaking through a dating app. The two met at Washington Park just before 1:30 a.m. March 3. Gamez’s boyfriend and the boyfriend’s brother showed up, Pomona Police said. 19-year-old Javier Soto, Gamez’s boyfriend, and Javier’s brother Anthony Soto, 38, pulled the victim from his 2012 tan Chevy Cruze and demanded he empty his pockets. One of the suspects pointed a stun gun at the victim, Pomona Police said.
All three suspects took off with the victim’s cell phone and Chevy Cruze. Officers were called by the victim at 9:40 p.m. that night after he found his subwoofer, stored in the stolen Cruze, posted for sale on the popular app OfferUp. “Officers setup a meeting in the parking lot of the 400 block of South Garey Avenue with the subjects who had listed the item on OfferUp,” Pomona Police said. All three suspects showed up at the meeting location in a black Honda Civic, were detained by officers and positively identified, Pomona Police said. All other property lost in the carjacking was returned but the Chevy Cruze is still missing. Among the charges the suspects face include carjacking, robbery, grand theft auto and making criminal threats. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - Police identified and arrested a suspect accused of robbing his victim Friday at a Pomona car wash. Alfonso Antonio Lopez, 32, was taken into custody March 2 near South Linden Street and East 6th Street after a brief foot pursuit when officers attempted to contact him, Pomona Police said. Using surveillance footage taken from the robbery scene and using “investigative techniques and leads,” officers with the Pomona Police Major Crimes Task Force identified Lopez. The robbery occurred around 4:50 a.m. March 1 at Good Tyme Car Wash, 475 E. Mission Blvd. The victim was stopped in his vehicle at the car wash when Lopez arrived in a grey 2006 Nissan Altima, pulled a ski mask over his face and demanded cash. Lopez allegedly exposed the butt of a handgun tucked in his waistband, Pomona Police said. “The victim gave the suspect his wallet and money because he feared for his life,” Pomona Police said.
Lopez was booked on suspicion of armed robbery. Lopez is also being investigated for additional crimes, including kidnapping and discharging a firearm in a negligent manner. Lopez is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail and is scheduled to appear at Pomona Superior Court Tuesday, March 5. Rigoberto Perez, 35, was taken into custody and has been booked on suspicion of attempted murder and robbery. He is accused of being the gunman in a failed robbery May 31, 2018 at an Arco gas station in the 800 block of Rio Rancho Road. A teen boy was shot and injured, Pomona Police said. Three other suspects were already in custody. Perez is on AB109 for narcotics, Pomona Police said. Perez is being held without bail and is scheduled to appear in Los Angeles Municipal Court Tuesday, February 26. Alberto Ramon Peraza, 25, was found after a thorough search by Pomona Police officers who recovered evidence of the robbery, according to Pomona Police Sergeant D. Brown. Officers responded to Holt Avenue and Reservoir Street at 2:21 a.m. September 17 and found a woman who claimed she was raped and robbed at knifepoint inside a dark-colored 2006 Infiniti four-door. Police began a search, using a suspect and vehicle description, ultimately locating the unoccupied Infiniti in the mobile home park, Brown said. It is unclear how Pomona officers were led to Montclair, or why the victim got into the suspect’s vehicle. “With the assistance of the Montclair Police Department, Pomona officers surrounded the residence in question and called out its occupants. One of the occupants was the suspect, Alberto Ramon Peraza,” Brown said. The victim positively identified Peraza as the suspect. Peraza was arrested at 5 a.m., according to Los Angeles County booking records. Peraza is being held in lieu of $1 million bail scheduled to appear in Pomona Superior Court Wednesday, September 19. Rodney Johnson, 19, a man already wanted for robbery and who is on active probation, was spotted walking near Towne and Arrow Highway around 7 p.m. Johnson spotted the officers and ran into a convenience store, but not before ditching a loaded handgun, Pomona Police said in a written statement. The loaded handgun was recovered and found to have a 30-round magazine, Pomona Police said. Johnson ran into a convenience store in the 600 block of East Arrow Highway, but he was quickly found and arrested. Johnson was booked on suspicion of possessing narcotics while armed and robbery. POMONA - Police announced the arrest of a man accused of committing 18 armed robberies across eight communities.
Jorge Armando Sanchez Frias, 33, was arrested April 5, four days after robbing a Pomona merchant in the 1100 block of West Second Street. Frias robbed the merchant at gunpoint. While surrendering cash, the merchant pulled a gun on Frias and an altercation ensued before Frias disarmed the merchant, fleeing with both guns, Pomona Police said. The merchant received minor injuries. Frias’ crime spree spanned across Pomona, as well as Azusa, Upland, Chino, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department’s Chino and Rancho Stations, Montclair, Walnut and Ontario from January 5 to April 1, Pomona Police said. Frias was found and arrested at Towne and Indian Hill avenues. The case against Frias was presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office who filed 14 counts of second-degree robbery, one count of assault with a deadly weapon with a firearm and one count of grand theft firearm. |
