Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - A 45-year-old Pomona man was arrested May 6 after a nearly three-month investigation led to DUI charges against the driver. Javan Draper was located on Packard Drive at Painter Court and arrested by the Pomona Police Special Investigations Unit after charges were officially filed against him and an arrest warrant issued, Pomona Police said. The fatal crash occurred in the 2200 block of Garey Avenue February 7 around 2 a.m. Draper, the driver of a black 2007 Chrysler Seabring, was speeding when he hot a concrete divider. The car hit a tree after rolling over, Pomona Police said. Draper’s passenger, 23-year-old Anthony Tucker Jr. of Pomona, died at the scene. An investigation by the department’s Major Accident Investigation Team revealed Draper was under the influence of alcohol and illegal drugs.
“MAIT investigators learned Draper was driving on a suspended driver’s license and had a recent DUI conviction. As part of his court proceedings, Draper was warned of the dangers of driving while intoxicated (Watson Advisement). Because of this advisement, and Draper’s actions, he is eligible to be charged with murder,” Pomona Police said. Draper was booked on suspicion of murder, DUI causing death and driving on a suspended license. Draper is being held in lieu of $2.35 million bail at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility ahead of a scheduled appearance in Pomona Superior Court June 4, according to Los Angeles County booking records. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - A driver and a child were hospitalized with undisclosed injuries after another driver fled the scene of a collision, police said Thursday. Alejandro Aviles, 27, was taken into custody April 30 when he fled from officers who tried to detain him. Aviles allegedly discarded a handgun while running from police, but he was caught a few blocks away and the gun was recovered, according to the Pomona Police Department. The crash occurred around 8 p.m. at Mission Boulevard and Towne Avenue. Aviles was determined to be driving while under the influence, Pomona Police said.
Aviles was booked on suspicion of DUI resulting in an injury collision, unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of a high-capacity magazine, Pomona police said. Aviles was released on $50,000 bond ahead of a scheduled court appearance set for May 4. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - An accused intoxicated motorcyclist received minor injuries after he and a Pomona Police officer collided April 19. The collision occurred in the area of Towne Avenue and Lincoln Avenue around 3:15 a.m. The officer was on-duty when the crash happened, according to the Pomona Police Department. “During the course of the investigation, it was determined that the motorcyclist was under the influence of alcohol and was driving while impaired at the time of the collision,” Pomona Police said in a written statement.
The rider was arrested. His booking information was not provided. The collision is being investigated by the Pomona Police Department's Major Accident Investigation Team. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - A Norco man was arrested Friday after recklessly evading police throughout Pomona and keeping them at bay during a brief standoff. Raul Salas, 37, rammed a police car as officers exited their vehicle near Holt Avenue and Currier Street around 12:38 a.m. March 6. Salas then hit a parked vehicle and led officers on a pursuit, Pomona Police said.
Salas allegedly made several more attempts to flee by ramming another police car after he drove through a car wash and stopped at a dead end, Pomona Police said. Salas was eventually taken into custody and booked on suspicion of assaulting a peace officer, felony evading and driving under the influence. He also had an outstanding burglary warrant, Pomona Police said. The arrests were made during a DUI and driver license checkpoint at Garey Avenue and Lexington Avenue. Officers also cited/arrested 23 drivers for driving unlicensed or for driving on a suspended or revoked license, Pomona Police said in a written statement. Officers towed four vehicles as well. The checkpoint was held at Garey Avenue and Monterey Avenue from 9 p.m.to 3 a.m. The citywide patrols were held from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. In addition to the three suspected DUI arrests, 36 drivers were arrested or cited for unlicensed driving, or driving on a suspended or revoked license. 17 vehicles were towed, the Pomona Police Department said.

Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - A 19-year-old man will be arrested upon release from a hospital, accused of being under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs when he crashed head-on into a truck, causing the death of a child May 7, police said. Pomona man Franky Provencio is facing a murder charge, as well as possession of a controlled substance and violating his probation, Pomona Police said. The crash occurred around 4:24 p.m. Tuesday on White Avenue at McKinley Avenue when Provencio in his blue 2001 GMC Yukon drove over the median and slammed into a southbound truck, killing child Julian George and critically injuring driver Peter George of Upland. Julian was apparently not properly restrained, Pomona Police said.
Provencio was driving with a suspended license and was on probation for a 2018 DUI conviction, Pomona Police said. “Suspect Provencio was warned of the dangers of driving while intoxicated (Watson Advisement). Because of this advisement and Suspect Provencio’s actions, he is eligible for to be charged with murder,” Pomona Police said. Pomona Police’s case against Provencio was presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office and with the help of the DA’s DUI Training and Prosecution Section, the arrest warrant was obtained, Pomona Police said. Peter George had alcohol in his system, but the level of intoxication is not yet known, Pomona Police said. Provencio’s passenger was injured, but has since been treated and released from the hospital. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - Both drivers in a head-on crash that killed a 6-year-old boy inside one of the vehicles may have been drunk driving, police said. Julian George, the boy killed in the crash, was identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. A northbound vehicle on White Avenue somehow crossed over the median and crashed head-on into a southbound vehicle near McKinley around 4:24 p.m., Pomona Police said. George was seated in the rear of one of the SUVs. Firefighters arrived and declared the boy dead at the scene.
A Pomona officer witnessed the crash. Peter George, the driver of one of the vehicles and father of Julian, is still listed in critical condition. A woman identifying herself as Cathy George started a gofundme campaign to help with medical and funeral costs. She denies that Peter George was intoxicated behind the wheel. “We've been seeing articles changing their tiles stating that both drivers were under the influence in the accident. This is an assumption, we do not believe that Peter had any alcohol in his system at the time of this accident,” Cathy said, adding that blood alcohol tests will confirm who was intoxicated. The condition of the other driver has not been disclosed. The checkpoint operated at Lexington Avenue and Garey Avenue from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. March 15 also yielded 36 citations/arrests for driving on a suspended or revoked license. 16 vehicles were also towed, Pomona Police said. DUI checkpoint locations are based on collision statistics and the frequency of DUI arrests.
