Officers with the Pomona Police Department Major Crimes Task Force stopped the driver for equipment violations near Eighth Street and Elm Street around 5:08 p.m. The officers recognized a passenger as a known probationer, according to the Covina Police Department. The driver, 37-year-old James Herrera, consented to a vehicle search and the weapons were discovered near the driver’s seat, Pomona Police said. Herrera, a Pomona man, was arrested along with 32-year-old passenger John Barron of Ontario. “Herrera admitted to possessing the firearms and attempting to conceal them from the officer’s,” according to the Pomona Police Department in a written statement. Herrera was booked on suspicion of possessing a loaded firearm in a vehicle and possession of an unregistered firearm. Barron was booked on a felony no-bail warrant. Driver Salvador Ortiz, 26, and parolee and documented gang member Christian Ayala, 24, were both arrested Ortiz refused to yield for a traffic stop. Police with the department’s Major Crimes Task Force reportedly witnessed Ortiz run a stop sign, according to the Pomona Police Department. The stop sign violation occurred in the area of Grand Avenue and Reservoir Street around 9:48 p.m. July 7. Ortiz also suspiciously drove too close to vehicles parked along the street, Pomona Police said. As he fled, Ortiz allegedly drove up on a sidewalk as he turned south onto Reservoir Street. Ayala allegedly tossed a handgun from the vehicle during the pursuit, Pomona Police said. Ortiz briefly stopped to allow Ayala to flee on foot, but both men were soon caught. Ayala was booked on suspicion of a parole violation, being a gang member in possession of a loaded firearm, possession of a loaded and unregistered firearm, being a felon in possession of a firearm and being a felon in possession of ammunition. A gang enhancement was also added, Pomona Police said. Ortiz was booked on suspicion of felony evading police. Pomona man Pete Garcia, 45, was booked on suspicion of possessing a firearm and narcotics, being a felon in possession of a firearm and being a felon in possession of ammunition, the Pomona Police Department said. Police attempted a traffic stop around 8:40 p.m. at Reservoir Street and Philadelphia Street. Garcia stopped in the drive thru of Angelo’s Burgers, 902 W. Mission Blvd., and consented to a vehicle search, the Pomona Police Department said. “Garcia consented to a search of the vehicle and a loaded firearm was recovered. Garcia was also in possession of narcotics and narcotics paraphernalia. He was arrested without incident and booked at the Pomona city jail,” according to the Pomona Police Department. Officers patrolling Third Street and Huntington Boulevard around 7:30 p.m. saw Abraham Chavez and other occupants of a parked vehicle smoking drugs March 18. Chavez was found concealing the loaded handgun, Pomona Police said. Chavez, 18, is on felony probation for a previous robbery arrest. He was booked on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm, possession of an unregistered firearm and being a felon in possession of ammunition. Dominique Rojas, 19, was charged by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office February 26. She is accused of shooting and wounding a 26-year-old West Covina woman, according to the Pomona Police Department. The shooting took place just before 9 a.m. at West Second Street and Curran Place. The victim was found suffering from a gunshot wound to the torso. She was hospitalized and treated for her wounds, Pomona Police said. The motive remains unclear, Pomona Police said. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - A gun was recovered after a driver led police on a chase December 9. 19-year-old Sebastian Rico allegedly refused to stop for police after he committed several vehicle code violations at Holt Avenue and White Avenue just before 7 p.m., Pomona Police said. During the chase, a handgun was tossed from the vehicle, Pomona Police said. Rico, a documented Pomona gang member, was arrested and booked on suspicion of possessing a loaded firearm, being a gang member in possession of a loaded firearm and possessing a loaded & unregistered firearm. The arrest was made by members of the Pomona Police Major Crimes Task Force. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - Police officers were able to arrest an armed suspect December 4 morning after he pointed a loaded rifle in their direction. Raul Cuevas Gallegos, a 26-year-old Pomona man, reportedly drove up alongside officers from the department’s Major Crimes Task Force who were parked at 7th Street and Rebecca Street just after 1 a.m. and pointed the rifle in their direction, according to the Pomona Police Department. Officers withdrew their weapons and ordered Cuevas to drop the rifle. He was safely taken into custody, Pomona Police said.
The rifle had a loaded magazine with 7mm ammunition. “The instantaneous response by the professionally trained Officers was the key to quickly deescalate the situation and safely take Cuevas into-custody,” Pomona Police said in a written statement. Cuevas was booked on suspicion of possessing a loaded firearm. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - Officers took down an illegal marijuana dispensary November 30 and recovered 18 pounds of marijuana, 19 pounds of marijuana product and an unregistered firearm, police said. The dispensary, 1425 E. Mission Blvd., was the target of numerous “administrative citations” by the city for building code violations and the owner was cited for having a marijuana dispensary operate on the property. The owner allegedly refused to comply with city requests to cease operation, according to the Pomona Police Department. The building was red-tagged numerous times. “The operators of these locations refuse to follow local and state laws. They sell unregulated product which is dangerous to the user,” according to the Pomona Police Department. “The products are purchased from the black-market and sold over the counter without a permit to anyone off the street. These products are laced with chemicals and have unregulated THC levels.”
One of the two weapons seized during the raid is an unregistered firearm, Pomona Police said. “The weapon was hidden, but was found and will be tested for DNA to trace it back to the owner,” Pomona Police said. The building is still red-tagged and cannot be occupied until the business is closed and the building deemed safe, Pomona Police said. Code enforcement officials will continue with administrative action against the owner and operators. The suspect, 29-year-old Ernie Castro of Highland, tussled with officers who ran after him when he decided to flee and detained him for suspicious activity. During the foot chase, Castro ditched what was later discovered to be a replica handgun and also possessed a dagger and machete, according to the Pomona Police Department. The Pomona Police Department’s Major Crimes Task Force was conducting gang suppression work around 11:40 p.m. in the 2900 block of Battram Street when they came upon Castro at Willie White Park, Pomona Police said.
“Officers attempted to stop a suspicious pedestrian who was later identified as Ernie Castro. During the contact, Castro made a quick movement to conceal his hand and then suddenly ran,” Pomona Police said in a written statement. Castro was booked on suspicion of resisting arrest, resisting arrest using force against officers, carrying a concealed dirk or dagger, public intoxication and additionally booked for a no-bail warrant and warrant for a weapons violation, Pomona Police said. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor POMONA - A Los Angeles-area gang member was arrested early Friday morning after an officer reportedly saw drug paraphernalia in plain sight inside the suspect’s vehicle. The suspect was stopped just before 12:30 a.m. Friday at Hamilton Boulevard and Muir Avenue. The suspect’s vehicle reportedly had no license plates. The officer searched the suspect vehicle after the officer saw the paraphernalia within, according to the Pomona Police Department. “Officers searched the rest of the car and found suspected methamphetamine and a loaded firearm,” the Pomona Police Department said in a written statement.
